Departmental Overview
The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With more than 230 regular faculty members, 1,940 graduate students and 3,250 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. Operating expenditures for the College are close to $200 million annually.
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) in both the College of Engineering and the Division of Computing Data Science and Society, is the largest department on the Berkeley campus consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, 3,400 undergraduates both in the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, 650 graduate students, and 60 staff members. EECS programs are consistently ranked in the top three by many measures, including U.S. News & World Report's national and global ranking. Annual operating budget not including research expenditures for EECS is $37 million.
The Department is actively engaged in teaching and research in the disciplines of Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biology, Databases, Graphics, Hardware / Architecture, Human-Computer Interaction, Operating Systems / Networking, Programming Systems / Software, Scientific Computing, Theory, Vision (in Computer Science) as well as Biosystems, Communication/Networking, Communications/Physical Layer, Control, Design, Modeling, and Analysis, Electromagnetics/Antennas, Integrated Circuits, Optics, Physical Electronics Devices, Physical Electronics/MEMS, Optoelectronics, Energy, Robotics, Signal Processing for Image & Video, Signal Processing for Speech & Audio (in Electrical Engineering). Computer Science operates research and instructional laboratories in Soda Hall and Sutardja Dai Hall, and Electrical Engineering operates like facilities in Cory Hall and Sutardja Dai Hall. EECS also has a significant technical staff support structure to provide support for research and instructional laboratories and fabrication facilities.

Responsibilities
50% Manages, plans and administers a range of administrative operations in a small to medium academic department, or a small to medium non-academic department or program. Has overall responsibility for daily administrative operations in the EECS Department Chairs' Offices. The EECS Department currently has three Chairs: EECS Chair, EE Division Chair, and CS Chair. Serves as the leader member of the EECS Chairs' Offices providing administrative support to the Chairs, and in representing the EECS Chairs' Offices to multiple internal and external constituencies. Leads development and implementation of effective systems for managing information, projects, and communications to ensure accurate and timely responses.
Serves as a primary lead person in responding to a wide range of inquiries and requests for services for the EECS Chairs' Offices (located in Cory and Soda buildings). Triages situations and resolves directly or forwards issues presented by staff, faculty, students, and external constituents (e.g., prospective students, parents, alumni, media representatives, vendors, industrial partners, etc.) to appropriate staff members for resolution. Functions as a gatekeeper, ensuring that only those issues that warrant attention are brought forward to the Chairs or directed to appropriate staff members as necessary.
Serves as one of the schedulers and provides correspondence support for the Chairs, including scheduling meetings and screening incoming meeting requests and mail.
Prepares presentations on behalf of the Chairs, including researching and drafting content.
Investigates issues and problems; drafts and prepare responses to urgent requests.
Researches, compiles and summarizes issues, policies and topics; provides background information and briefing materials for the Chair's meetings on campus and while traveling.
Has supervisory responsibility for the Chairs' Office Assistant, who serves as the primary scheduler for the Chairs and coordinates logistics for meetings/events, catering, etc.
Performs other projects as assigned (e.g., data collection partnering with department leadership and senior managers, etc.)
40% Administrative operations include budgetary financial management and human resources and may include some of the following functions: IT, facilities, student services, and / or contracts and grants.
Responsible for implementing basic and moderately complex programs, meetings and events designed to inform internal and external constituencies of the various EECS programs, policies, and practices. Constituencies include the faculty, students, staff, general public, prospective students, parents, alumni, donors, campus visitors, industry partners, government and community representatives.
Provides or directs logistical support including scheduling, maintaining distribution lists, making room reservations, arranging for catering, prepping and distributing materials, AV/media support and related tasks.
10% Responsible for the Chairs' travel, including complex international itineraries, meeting materials, payments and reservations. Handles travel-related and other reimbursements as needed. Provides backup support in coordinating travel-related arrangements and reimbursements for special guests/visitors of the Chairs' Offices, including faculty candidates.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Political acumen and sensitivities to the differing perspectives and circumstances within all levels of the department, the College of Engineering, CDSS Division, and the Campus as well as external constituencies.
Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Strong skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, alumni/donors, students and external constituencies; both verbally and in writing.
Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service.
Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with campus processes, protocols and procedures. Knowledge of federal regulations such as FERPA.
Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
