Position description
The Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS), established in 1919, is an organized research unit which supports interdisciplinary research and public service, focused on American politics and public policy, and coordinates research activities for several separate research centers, four faculty colloquia, a professional Library, a publishing program, a major student internship program, and several affiliated programs. Its Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Institute annually administers research grants and contracts from a wide variety of federal, state and private funding sources, with an annual operating budget of about $6 million. The Institute and its research centers employ approximately 50 persons, made up of affiliated faculty and researchers, graduate students and administrative staff. In addition, the Institute has a thriving Visiting Scholars Program.
The Evidence in Governance and Politics (EGAP) research program is housed at IGS. EGAP is a research, evaluation, and learning network with worldwide reach that promotes rigorous knowledge accumulation, innovation, and evidence-based policy in various governance domains, including accountability, political participation, mitigation of societal conflict, and reducing inequality. It does so by fostering academic-practitioner collaborations, developing tools and methods for analytical rigor, and training academics and practitioners alike, with an intensive focus in the Global South.
The Assistant Specialist will support the EGAP Trainings and Methods Directors co-directorate in programming around EGAP's Learning Days, including the organization of workshops, development and delivery of curriculum, and support to regional hub partners. The group will be responsible for continued development and maintenance of the EGAP Learning Days book, including the development of instructional tracks for additional participant groups (including practitioners).
Contribute to drafting and editing of EGAP Learning Days pedagogical materials (Learning Days book, slide presentation decks, EGAP methods guides, exercises, etc.)
Support French translation of materials, particularly for technical language related to experimental methods
Review and edit substantive aspects of EGAP tools and resources, including policy briefs, research summaries, and other EGAP resources

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Minimum one (1) year of research experience Preferred qualifications
  • Masters or equivalent international degree
  • Minimum one (1) year of research experience in quantitative methods
  • Research methods training, such as Masters level coursework in quantitative methods, econometrics, and/or statistics.
  • Experience in field experimental research methods
  • Experience providing quantitative methods training and teaching quantitative methods
  • Experience working on or managing randomized controlled trials
  • Teaching technical language on research methods
  • Proficient in R (statistical program)
  • Experience working in civil society organizations preferred
  • Personable, detail-oriented, and diplomatic; and
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally 15-30%
  • French language proficiency (fluency preferred)
