Departmental Overview
The Rausser College of Natural Resources is composed of four academic departments and a graduate group (Agricultural & Resource Economics; Environmental Science, Policy & Management; Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology; Plant and Microbial Biology; and the Energy & Resources Group) offering 10 undergraduate majors and 9 minors in diverse areas of natural social sciences with an undergraduate enrollment ~ 2400 students. Undergraduate advising for all College prgrams is provided by the Office of Instruction & Student Affairs which incorporates major and College advising in the same unit for one cohesive, pro-active advising structure.
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Dean of Instruction & Student Affairs, the Assistant Director of Advising and Operations coordinates the day-to-day and annual college-wide advising tasks for the Office of Instruction & Student Affairs. The Assistant Director coordinates First-Year Experience programming for the Rausser College of Natural Resources. The Assistant Director serves as the advising resource for faculty, staff, and other campus administrators in relation to complex problems involving undergraduate students, as well as advising students directly on a limited basis.

Responsibilities
Advising and Operations (40%)
Managing the Front Desk operations of the Student Resource Center pertaining to student advising services (i.e. email, in-person appointments, virtual appointments and drop-in advising), coordination of student petition processes and policies, and oversight of services provided by student workers and Peer Advising Leaders.
Annual tasks include coordination of fall and spring enrollment holds and releases, mid-term grade reports, academic review process, and degree processing.
Using in-depth knowledge and expertise in student affairs, devises solutions that meet individual needs and follow University policies and regulations. Answers inquiries about academic programs and College requirements for students, parents, faculty, staff and community college personnel, and provides referrals to other campus offices as appropriate.
Serves as a resource person for problematic student records. Assesses administrative problems that may arise affecting staff or students, investigates alternatives, devises and implements solutions. Interfaces with campus offices to determine approaches to resolving problematic student issues. Applies high-level knowledge of student affairs administration and innovative problem-solving skills. Interprets and ensures enforcement of policies. Adjudicates student requests to withdraw from the university and applications for readmission to the College.
Waives requirements and deadlines as authorized by the Assistant Dean. Effectively balances dual role of student advocate and department representative, promoting student success while enforcing policies that protect the integrity of the degree.
First-Year Experience Coordinator (35%)
Develops, interprets, implements and administers student academic programs under "The First Year Experience" which is designed to promote first-year students' academic success in support of mission, values, goals, and student learning outcomes of the campus and College.
In consultation with the College Advisors, coordinates all aspects of Golden Bear Experience including bCourse module preparation, Golden Bear Advising, and Golden Bear Orientation.
Serves as Rausser College Advisor to "Undeclared" major students (approx. 100 students), facilitating exploration of and preparation for majors both within Rausser College and outside.
In collaboration with the Associate and Assistant Dean, co-facilitates NATRES 24 "How to Be a Rausser CNR Scientist", a freshman seminar designed to promote academic success for first-generation college students, develops and administers presentations, workshops, laboratory visits, and panels that demystify university policies and practices, build hard skills in communication practices and professional etiquette, and build confidence to navigate UC Berkeley.
Supervision and Management (10%)
Supervises 2 Student Academic Advisors who are providing the full range of academic advising to majors with high student-to-advisor ratios.
Supervises 1 Administrative Assistant who serves as Intake Advisor for the Student Resource Center and coordinates student workers.
Develops staff job description. Oversees recruitment and hiring; recommends employee selection. Provides orientation, training for new staff and promotes career development. Works effectively with people from diverse cultures on such issues as performance management, organizational changes, work place climate, and other related issues.
Monitors employee performance, conducts Achieve Together conversations with direct reports and review, and resolves performance issues. Explains campus personnel policies. Responsible for resolution of personnel issues or actions, including corrective action, if necessary, in compliance with applicable campus HR policies and procedures. Maintains personnel records and schedules leaves according to projected staffing needs.
College Representation (10%)
Participates on campus committees. Act as liaison among students, campus departments, and administration in both daily operations and highly sensitive advising situations. Creates and maintains a network among the student service offices. Represents the student service unit to the campus community and relevant external constituencies.
Serves as a resource person for the College departments, Offices of Undergraduate Admissions, Registrar and Records, Financial Aid, Cal Student Central, and other student services including Educational Abroad Programs, Berkeley International Office, EOP, UHS regarding the College's programs and policies.
Develops and implements services to enhance department's outreach to underrepresented students.
Plans and participates in presentations and outreach efforts for new students by speaking to large groups as a representative of the College and the University.
Plans and conducts training sessions with faculty, undergraduate major advisers, peer advisers, staff, alumni, high school and community college counselors, and administrators.
Professional Development (5%)
Maintains and updates working knowledge of student affairs administration by participating in campus organizations, networking with peers, and attending professional association meetings. Takes appropriate classes/workshops in supervisory, management, or student affairs related topics. Keeps current with national trends related to undergraduate academic advising as well as best practices in student affairs administration. Serves on campus committees.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated leadership experience in college-level student services program development, implementation, and analysis in relation to educational policies, trends, and university policies, procedures, and practices.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of or ability to learn computer application programs commonly used in higher education admissions and student services administration.
Experience in recruiting, advising, and/or counseling historically underrepresented students as well as students from a diverse array of backgrounds and experiences.
Experience with managing direct reports, as well as with leading cross-functional teams that do not have a direct, formal reporting relationship.
Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
Demonstrated skills in problem identification and creative problem solving, sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking and analysis, organizational skills, emotional intelligence and cultural humility.
Experience utilizing quantitative and qualitative data to identify areas in need of improvement; experience with monitoring/assessing processes and carrying out process improvement efforts.
Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuade others, and lead.
Ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, in a timely manner, with a high volume of work in a complex working environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; demonstrated effectiveness in building teams and collaborations; ability to adapt as needed.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Absolute ability to maintain confidentiality.
Education
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
Master's degree in Counseling, Education, High Education Administration or related field and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $62,300 - $90,700 (Grade 21).
