Departmental Overview
University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) helps build Berkeley's excellence through communications, public outreach, and fundraising, all to raise public awareness about Berkeley and increase private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and strengthens campus unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. It handles a range of central activities and services encompassing prospect development, communications, donor stewardship, gift management, data management, and more.
Prospect Development Overview
Prospect Development supports the philanthropic success of principal, major, and leadership annual gift officers by identifying, researching, and advancing donors through the solicitation cycle. Every gift officer with an active portfolio is assigned a dedicated prospect analyst who provides support tailored to their specific needs and goals. This partnership contributes to building and maintaining relationships with donors by matching donor's interests to the University's priorities. The department provides prospect research and wealth assessment, builds and maintains the prospect pipeline, manages portfolios and solicitation plans in partnership with campus fundraisers, develops predictive and descriptive models, and performs customized prospect analysis.
Position Overview
With advanced knowledge in the field of prospect research, the Assistant Director, Philanthropic Due Diligence provides in-depth information on a wide variety of prospects for use by Berkeley leadership in pursuit of private funding for University initiatives. Initiates proactive research and analysis for organization-wide prospect development efforts with critical impact throughout the organization. Evaluates reputational or legal risks pertaining to potential donors, and delivers research products to meet the due diligence needs of the campus.
The Assistant Director, Philanthropic Due Diligence also applies extensive knowledge of philanthropic due diligence research strategies, data and analytics to support fundraisers and others engaged in substantial projects of large scope, impact and complexity. Provides input on prospect assignment, cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Responsibilities
Provides philanthropic due diligence research results, strategies and analysis, including in-depth and highly sensitive research into legal and/or reputational risk issues involving potential philanthropic prospects. Analyzes prospective donors' financial information, backgrounds, interests, philanthropy, and relationships using a variety of electronic databases, publications, and on-line services. Coordinates due diligence needs for volunteer leadership and annual award nominations. Establishes effective working relationships with fundraising staff and philanthropic due diligence stakeholders across the organization. Captures and tracks strategic philanthropic due diligence data consistent with industry best practices and organizational objectives. Stays current on due diligence best practices and makes recommendations to improve the effectiveness of due diligence processes. Promotes and socializes philanthropic due diligence program; Assisting the Director of Philanthropic Due Diligence, liaises with campus colleagues to ensure philanthropic due diligence research products, methodologies and processes are chosen and implemented to provide accurate, timely information to fundraising staff and campus leadership on entities with giving potential. Ensures appropriate level of due diligence is conducted, including providing research materials that include context and any recommendations for senior leadership, as appropriate. Provides guidance to and collaborates with Prospect Development colleagues on philanthropic due diligence research and processes. Contributes to the development of a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and innovative work environment that promotes creativity and innovation. Serves as a resource to technical/system/data teams for philanthropic due diligence research related data quality. In conjunction with UDAR and campus colleagues, communicates with UC Berkeley's fundraising community on philanthropic due diligence methodology, processes, and procedures.
Required Qualifications
Proven technical skills required to utilize multiple complex research systems to synthesize complex and large sets of data to produce research findings for fundraising staff and leadership. Knowledge of and experience with techniques and methodologies of research using a broad range of information sources. Advanced analytical abilities and problem solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues, identify options for resolution, and apply sound judgement. Critical thinking skills to challenge conventional practices, adapt established methods for improved uses, pursue ongoing system improvement, create novel solutions to problems, and evaluate new technology as potential solutions to existing problems. Advanced verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate through all mediums and with all groups. Ability to listen actively, understand varying viewpoints and receive feedback. Skills to tactfully articulate reasoning behind own opinions and change the thinking of or gain acceptance from others.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced knowledge in prospect research analysis, strategy and best practices. Knowledge of and experience with due diligence/risk management research. Ability to apply knowledge and skills to recommend improvements to operations and results. Advanced knowledge of confidentiality, regulatory and university policies governing research activities. Ability to deal with confidential matters with tact and sensitivity. Project management skills to prioritize personal and team tasks and see research through from inception to completion on schedule. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility to effectively handle change. Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively to coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization. Maintains rapport and professional relationships with peers, peers in the industry, multidisciplinary team members, and management.
Education/Training:
Experience in prospect research or due diligence/risk management research.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) career position eligible for UC benefits.
This is an exempt, monthly paid career position. The annual salary range is $91,500 - $93,500, commensurate with experience.
This is a hybrid remote-friendly position up to 100%.
