Departmental Overview
The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL) operates and maintains a network of traditional geophysical instruments across Northern California. The data collected is archived for research purposes as well as analyzed in real-time to provide earthquake information and to produce earthquake early warnings, known as ShakeAlerts.
The BSL created the MyShake app to put earthquake products, including earthquake early warnings, into the hands of smart phone users. Additionally, a novel approach to producing earthquake early warnings is to use cell phones and other mobile devices to detect earthquakes, which the BSL has successfully proven possible with MyShake. This position exists to lead software development efforts and to manage products, such as MyShake.

Responsibilities
25% Acts as the technical lead and collaborates with a team of software development professionals that design, develop, modify, debug, and evaluate code that incldues real- time processing.
20% Leads development projects and enforce plans for software development, deployment, testing, and support; responsible project goals and timelines, and manages progress using best practice project management techniques.
15% Analyzes and applies highly complex data sources, reviews metrics, and prepares reports for both internal and external stakeholders. Reviews and selects the appropriate tools and methods to obtain optimal results.
10% Participates in software testing, verifies test results, and approves continuation of software release cycle.
10% Serves as a technical lead for software development, especially mobile device apps that are supported by cloud-based backend services, such as MyShake.
5% Sets the technical requirements for complex software specifications, balancing considerations from clients, end-users, management, and development team. Develops the specification and implementation of complex test plans.
5% Keeps abreast of latest technologies and methods; applies best industry practices, community standards and department policies and procedures.
10% Other tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of applications programming, preferably including cloud-based backend services and mobile apps.
Highly advanced skills associated with software specification, design, modification, implementation and deployment.
Demonstrated ability to solicit and understand functional needs and how software products can support those needs.
Excellent project leadership and management skills, preferably including the development and execution of strategic roadmaps.
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, amongst team, management, and external parties.
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization, including creation and distribution of reports.
Demonstrated complex problem-solving and data-analyzing skills.
Must be self-motivated, works independently and as part of a team, with the ability to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience developing and executing complex test plans.
Experience with focus groups and assimilating user feedback.
Salary & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000, commensurate with experience. This is a 100% FTE career position eligibile for full benefits.
