University of Alaska - External Careers is Hiring an Operations and Maintenance Technician - Poker Flat Facilities Near Fairbanks, AK

Would you like to work at the largest land-based rocket research range in the world? Poker Flat Research Range in Chatanika is looking for an Operations and Maintenance Technician. This job has a wide variety of duties including basic facility, vehicle, and road maintenance along with being part of the rocket launch team in the winter. Additional Position Information:

This position assists researchers in a variety of capacities such as installing equipment, modifying structures, accommodating research, and general facility work requiring heavy equipment operation, welding, fabrication, construction, hazardous material handling, and ordnance handling.

Additional Department Information:

Poker Flat is a remote research site approximately 30 miles north of Fairbanks and is operated primarily under a contract with NASA. The range serves not just NASA but a diverse group of researchers covering fields from space physics to Long Term Ecological research to Oil Spill research.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and technical procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other similarly classified employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting including following, interpreting and communicating instructions given by management; relating to management and other employees in a positive manner; making efforts to solve crew conflicts, and assisting in providing a productive and safe work environment.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as pressures, frequency, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to work in remote places or extreme weather conditions.
Required Experience & Education:

Journeyman level or equivalent certification in a specialized field including but not limited to carpentry, plumbing, or electrical; or a minimum of ten years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This includes certification or ability to be certified in the following areas:
Pyro/Ordnance certification required by NASA (training provided annually).
Hazwhoper certification, emphasis on oil spill and hydrocarbon cleanup (training provided annually).
Commercial Driver’s License preferred or have the ability to obtain.
Lifting Device (Cranes, forklifts, manlifts, etc) certification.
Certification on Building Controls or the ability to obtain them.
First Responder training/certification (provided annually).

Salary Information:

This position is full-time, CT 2, term-funded, non-exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA Crafts and Trades salary schedule, based on education and experience.

Salary Information: CT2 /Step 1 $26.41/hr. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wage Grade Schedule - http://www.alaska.edu/labor/local-6070/ ).
