Job Description
Associate Dean of Genomic Medicine
The UAB Department of Genetics and the Dean of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine seek a visionary leader to direct a program in Genomic Medicine. The successful candidate will be an MD or MD/PhD and able to lead and sustain grant-supported clinical and/or laboratory research programs in genomic medicine.
For clinicians, up to 20% effort seeing patients in genomic medicine-related clinics can be supported, in which case board certification in clinical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics is required. Faculty rank will be at the level of Associate Professor or Professor, depending on the experience of the candidate and external grant funding of the candidate. Salary, and tenure status will also be commensurate with experience and qualifications of the candidate and external grant funding of the candidate.
The UAB Department of Genetics has a robust program in genomic medicine, including an Undiagnosed Diseases Program (an affiliate site of the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Network), the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative sponsored by the State of Alabama, and participation in several large NIH-funded consortia, including the All of Us Research Program, the eMERGE Network, and BabySeq2. We have a close collaboration with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, AL. There is also an active training program, including an undergraduate major in genetics and genomics, graduate training in genetics and genomics, a genetic counselor training program, a genetics residency program, and NHGRI-funded programs in genomic medicine, including a T32 in Genomic Medicine and SURE-GM, an R25-funded summer program for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to spend one summer at HudsonAlpha followed by a second summer at UAB.
The Associate Dean of Genomic Medicine will be responsible for leadership for the All of Us Southern Network and the Alabama Genome Health Initiative and for the T32 and R25 training programs. If the candidate is a Board Certified Clinical Geneticist then s/he will be the Clinical leader/advisor of the UAB branch of BabySeq2, a program spearheaded by Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Center for Precision Animal Modeling, an NIH funded program to develop animal models for human disorders to validate the pathogenicity of genomic variants and provide model systems for therapeutic development and eMERGE, an NHGRI-funded consortium to develop systems to integrate genomic medicine with electronic health records. The Associate Dean will also interface with the Chief Genomics Officer to help in the incorporation of genomics and genetics into clinical medicine.
