What does this role do?
  • The Assistant Director for Laboratory Safety is responsible for the research and laboratory safety programs for all on-campus and off-campus locations.
  • The Assistant Director for Laboratory Safety provides strategic leadership in the development and implementation of laboratory safety programs to ensure compliance with local, state and federal statutes, regulations and University programs.
    • This position requires collaboration with faculty, staff, and students, as well as, facilitation of a faculty led laboratory safety steering committee.
    • This position is required to be on call for emergencies after regular class hours, on weekends, and holidays.
    This position may also serve as the University's Biosafety Officer and Chemical Hygiene Officer. This role administers and helps to develop, where needed, laboratory environmental, health and safety management systems. This includes: developing and delivering training, providing technical support, and conducting laboratory safety audits and assessments. This position is heavily relied upon to provide technical expertise in the areas of biological and chemical safety, hazardous material response and handling, and hazardous materials / dangerous goods shipping.
    This position does not qualify for remote work.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelors degree in Physical Science with emphasis in chemistry or biology.
    • Understanding of local, state and federal regulations related to hazardous materials/waste, general and biological laboratory safety, and DOT/IATA shipping.
    • Understanding of research activities and systems.
    • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate with diverse groups of people.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of computer and software applications.
    • Knowledge of monitoring equipment and personal protective equipment used for emergency response.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Masters degree in Physical Science with an emphasis in chemistry or biology.
    • Professional designation as a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM), Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
