The Assistant Dean of Students for Community Standards oversees the education and implementation of the University's student disciplinary processes consistent with the institution's policies and federal and state laws and regulations. With a focus on student growth and development, the Assistant Dean of Students manages consultation, intake, investigation, and adjudication of student complaints and case referrals involving all on- and off-campus disciplinary matters, including academic integrity and Title IX/sexual misconduct. The incumbent also oversees the University's off-campus student services, managing efforts to educate students about apartment leasing, off-campus safety, and positive relationships with neighbors while working to improve and maintain constructive Town-Gown relations.

The Assistant Dean of Students oversees a program that supports and promotes a safe and inclusive learning environment by actively engaging with students, faculty, staff, and community partners. This engagement enables various formal and informal resolution processes to address concerns, conflicts, and violations of university policies. To best serve as a facilitator for these efforts, the Assistant Dean of Students must have considerable knowledge of the policies, laws, regulations, and due process requirements governing the resolution of student conduct complaints. Additionally, this individual must engage with on- and off-campus partners to develop systems and services that enhance the student experience on campus and in the community.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Student Conduct Process University-wide.
    • Student Conduct and Title IX & Sexual Misconduct Case Resolution- review, process, and resolve student conduct referrals generated by campus partners and off-campus complaints.
    • Resolve student conduct referrals via alternative dispute resolutions when warranted.
    • Monitor the timely, accurate resolution of student conduct referrals by campus-wide Student Conduct Administrators.
    • Coordinate with Residential Life and other Student Conduct Administrators to delegate intake, resolution processes, monitoring, and follow-up, as appropriate.
    • Oversee the recruitment and training for all Student Conduct Administrators, Hearing Board Members, and Advisors.
    • Oversee the maintenance of student disciplinary records in accordance with the Records Retention & Disposition policy and process. Respond to requests for disciplinary records per FERPA.
  • Off-Campus Student Services and Engagement
    • Oversee the delivery of programming and regular communications to UAlbany's off-campus residents.
    • Remain abreast of off-campus incidents and actively work toward resolving conflicts, student conduct matters, and Town-Gown issues as they arise.
  • Emergency & Temporary Actions
    • Perform an individual student risk assessment to determine if it is appropriate to issue interim action to mitigate risk to the institution, faculty/staff, and students.
  • Compliance & Policies
    • Monitor and maintain the University's compliance with NYS Education Law, Title IX, Clery, and other relevant related laws, regulations, policies, and case law governing student disciplinary matters.
    • Maintain Community Rights & Responsibilities, the student code of conduct, ensuring all policies and procedures are up to date.
  • Consultations, Collaborations, and Presentations
    • Work with campus partners to manage, resolve, and seek compliance regarding student conduct cases.
    • Facilitate training and informational presentations for campus constituents as needed.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary committees on student conduct records, consultations, or risk assessments.
  • Administrative & Assessment
    • Annually collect and report student conduct referral Clery data.
    • Develop and maintain updated metrics yearly or as required.
  • Software Management
    • Oversee internal and third-party student conduct management software systems.
  • Professional Development
    • Maintain at least eight (8) hours of yearly training with the SUNY Student Conduct Institute (SCI).
    • Participate in workshops, webinars, training sessions, and conferences to remain current on best practices in the student conduct sector.
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related area from a college or university accredited by a US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Five (5) years of experience working in Student Affairs or similar student service capacity in Higher Education.
  • Ability to work and make sound decisions under stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to de-escalate stressful or contentious situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience presenting to audiences of various sizes.
  • Ability to excel in a community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Superior analytical skills, demonstrated by experience analyzing complex evidence and facts, adjudicating student conduct cases, and/or writing clear, organized, evidence-based student conduct hearing decisions.
  • Experience in crisis or incident management
  • Five years of experience adjudicating student conduct cases and/or annually serving and regularly participating as a Hearing Board member for student conduct cases, including Title IX and sexual misconduct cases.
