Clinical Assistant (CMA/LPN) Center for Liver Disease

Part-Time 24 hrs/week

Shift: Days

No weekends!

Responsible for assisting the physician and nursing personnel with direct patient care, scheduling tests, enter orders, document lab results, schedule procedures, refill medications, patient calls, referrals, injections, scanning records, faxing, assist with authorizations, patient education, assist with outreach clinics and preparing for clinic. Perform other tasks as assigned and required, both administrative and clinical.

Responsibilities

Clinic Duties

  • Answers questions and provides teaching to patients and family members.
  • Documents appropriate information in the patient’s chart. Complete patient forms and file medical records/correspondence.
  • Schedule referrals for patients with specialists or outpatient services as requested by the provider. Complete appropriate forms or requisitions needed for referrals or lab testing, including appropriate CPT/ICD10 coding.
  • Travel to outreach clinics with providers as assigned.
  • Assist in telemedicine clinics in office as assigned.
  • Assist provider with patient examination, procedures and emergencies.
  • Order diagnostic tests and laboratory/ Endoscopic procedures. Monitor results and document in Epic.
  • Assist with patient prescription refills as requested.
  • Prepare and assist provider during clinic with patient examination, specimen collection, minor surgical procedures and treatment of the patients, including administration of medication under direct supervision of the provider.

Other Functions-performed on an as needed basis

  • Maintain inventory for clinical supplies.
  • Instruct patients with special instructions given by the provider. Provide patient education as directed.
  • Perform functions other than described due to extenuating circumstances.

  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, JCAHO, DNV, OSHA, CMS and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the designated time frame.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
  • This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPHDM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.
  • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed expectations.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Graduate of a medical assistant or licensced practical nurse program. CMA or LPN equivalent
  • Experience: Previous clinical Experience preferred/desirable.
  • License(s)/Certification(s): Current Iowa licensure in good standing to practice as a medical assistant, certification by AAMA, or as a licensed practical nurse. Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire. Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Microsoft Office – basic computer skills. Customer/patient focused. Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

  • Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position. Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities. May drive a UPH vehicle, rental, or own vehicle.
