Acts in the role of educator for new team member and also in implementing new ideas and best practices in the nursing areas. Demonstrates excellent teaching and collaboration skills with all disciplines in providing expert nursing skills to patients and their families. Has the ability to integrate evidence- based best practices to implement them in the nursing areas. Works across the continuum of care to maintain standards of care and quality improvement within area of clinical expertise.

Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Demonstrates superior clinical competency and leadership. Acts as a role model for the team member.
  • Assists with special projects to improve the quality of care across the continuum of care.
  • Leads the orientation process and coordination for new team member.
  • Able to assess needs of new team member and assists in meeting their orientation needs.
  • Works in collaboration with Clinical Specialist Nurse and nursing leadership in determining educational needs of the team member.
  • Assists with evaluation of orientation and preceptor programs.
  • Consults about issues related to provider competency.

Professional Growth:

  • Assumes responsibility for implementing evidence-based practice and is able to incorporate into daily practice.
  • In collaboration with the Clinical Specialist, organizes on going education for team member.
  • Complies with all nursing policies and procedures, safety goals, infection prevention, and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Completes annual mandatory education
  • Maintains patient confidentiality. Observes and instructs others on need for patient confidentiality.

Communication:

  • Communicates utilizing the FOCUS standards in all aspects of care and interactions with others.
  • Effectively communicates with all team members, physicians, ancillary team member and customers. Verbal communication is clear and concise. Written communication is legible and done using approved abbreviations.

Collaboration:

  • Practice indicates compliance with HIPPA, DNV, OSHA, and all regulatory agencies.
  • Flexible in meeting the needs of orientation of new team member including ability to work all shifts and weekends as needed to orient new team member.
  • Works effectively with a multidisciplinary team assessing needs of the patient and family.
  • Works directly with the Nurse Manager of assigned unit to identify the needs of the unit and facilitate the development and implementation of necessary education and strategies for the unit.

Responsible for Educational needs of the OR team member.

  • Determines education needs of new team member members:
  • Designs and completes orientation for new team member members (RNs, STs, CTs, CPTs, Secretaries)
  • Oversees learning needs and opportunities of new team member
  • Collaborates with Leads to identify case assignments for new team member
  • Collaborates with surgeons to assure a mutual positive environment by balancing the learning needs of the new team member with needs of the surgeon
  • Utilizes the Clinical Nurse Expert, Leads and ST2s for teaching and development of learning opportunities
  • Retains Orientation records and evaluations through one year
  • Develops and coordinates Preceptorship for new team member members:
  • Identifies and develops experienced team member to be Preceptors
  • Acts as the primary Preceptor for new RNs
  • Teaches EPIC EMR application in conjunction with CT / Super-users
  • Coordinates Preceptors and new team member assignments

Determines educational needs for OR team member members:

  • Oversees and structures Annual Skills Days for all OR team member
  • Collaborates with CPE, Leads and ST2s to identify and evaluate team member skills.
  • Utilizes Education Committee and senior team members for identification of skill deficits or needs and for demonstration and teaching.
  • Collaborates with CPE, ST2s and Leads to identify and develop in-service programs for new equipment, drugs, instruments/instrumentation, practices and / or processes.
  • Utilizes the assistance of the Clinical Practice Expert for education concerning best-practice and/or policies.
  • Oversees NetLearning programs, specific to the OR (i.e., Mosby’s Skill programs) and Hospital required modules, with the ability to run reports.
  • Records and retains records of team member attendance and completion of in-services, skills competencies and evaluations.
  • Assists Surgery Manager with annual team member evaluations by providing competencies records kept throughout the year.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative team member. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department team member related to compliance.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Must have completed an accredited nursing program and possess a valid nursing license.

BSN Preferred

Experience:

3 years of clinical specialty and proven teaching expertise

License(s)/Certification(s):

· Current valid nursing license

· BCLS required upon hire or obtained within 30 days from date of hire

Certification in clinical specialty encouraged

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

· Excellent teaching and communication skills

· Able to lead multidisciplinary teams

· Able to problems solve and direct others

· Expertise in research-based problem solving

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
