JOB OVERVIEW

Unity College Hybrid Learning is currently seeking a full-time Hybrid Learning Assistant/Associate Professor in Captive Wildlife Care with an entrepreneurial spirit to teach and design undergraduate-level courses for our bachelor’s degree in Captive Wildlife Care. This program is designed for students interested in careers related to the care and husbandry of wild species in captivity and education of the public concerning conservation issues. Courses include, but are not limited to, Animal Training and Care, Animal Nutrition, Animal Husbandry and Genetics, Comparative Anatomy, Comparative Physiology, Animal Health and Disease, Designing Captive Animal Environments, and Animal Care Technical Skills. Competitive candidates should have a record of scholarship in the field of animal health and behavior and a strong passion for teaching courses designed to prepare learners for 21st century careers. 

Unity College's Hybrid Learning bachelor’s degree in Captive Wildlife Care prepares students for careers at zoos and aquariums, in the veterinary fields, as animal welfare officers, and for a future-focused on the care and well-being of wild and captive animals around the world. This degree provides students with the essential knowledge and professional skills to succeed in settings such as veterinary medicine degree programs, companion and wild animal care facilities, wildlife rehabilitation, and preserves. 

This position will support Captive Wildlife Care student success, career networking, completion rates, course instruction, development and program review.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Teach environmentally focused Captive Wildlife Care courses and other courses as assigned.
  • Develop up to 4 courses per year.
  • Be knowledgeable in the appropriate delivery of the content in a non-standard calendar and within relevant modalities.
  • Teach a minimum of 480 student workload credits per calendar year (~8 courses/year) as assigned.
  • Conduct scholarship at a regional or national level resulting in publication in peer-reviewed professional journals, delivery of papers at professional association meetings, coordination and implementation of research programs, and/or professional practice.
  • Work with Dean to assess and evaluate courses and programs in appropriate discipline.
  • Use different learning modes and types of technology to engage students in achieving learning outcomes.
  • Guide capstone projects in assigned programs as needed.
  • Participate in faculty governance as assigned.
  • Help recruit students into the Hybrid Learning programs.
  • Maintain currency in course delivery and technology. 
  • Demonstrate a high degree of commitment to customer service and quality education.
  • Pro-actively communicate challenges, successes, and failures with leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC EDUCATION, SKILLS AND COMPENTCIES:

Required:

  • The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D., DVM or other equivalent terminal degree plus:
  • Training or experience in the field of animal health and/or behavior.
  • Substantial experience working with wildlife in zoos, aquariums, rehabilitation facilities, nature centers or veterinary practice.
  • A knowledge of basic husbandry, training, and/or enrichment of wild and/or captive wildlife.
  • Animal health and behavior centric research experience working with wild and/or captive wildlife.
  • Record of scholarly research through publications, presentations and/or professional practice.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with technical terminology as appropriate 
  • Excellent initiative and organizational skills with ability to work both autonomously and in a team
  • Great time management skills
  • Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse political/socioeconomic backgrounds and a wide range of physical and academic abilities
  • Personal commitment to the environmental focus and mission of the college
  • Ability to obtain a valid Maine driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to function effectively within a matrix organizational structure, maintaining open lines of communication while being discreet, courteous and well poised.
