Job Summary:The Director of Process Engineering and Conceptual Design is an expert in both Process and Conceptual Engineering as well as responsible for the output of the department. The Director is responsible for engineering standards and work processes related to process engineering (preliminary P&ID, equipment design, thermodynamics, cycle development), system engineering (P&ID, equipment/piping/instrumentation/safety valve specifications), and conceptual engineering (indicative estimates, solution development, configurator tools).

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed understanding of client/cluster requirements and customer process impacts.
  • Lead technical development and perform and/or provide for economic evaluation of solution options. Evaluate gas supply options across an appropriate range of different production technologies.
  • Interface with Business Development and/or Product Management to explore the potential for expanding the scope of an opportunity.
  • Develop plant operating scenarios across the anticipated range of industrial gas needs. Identify technical and techno-commercial risks associated with the solution options and perform or support business evaluations of the necessary assessments.
  • Perform the required due diligence relating to plant operability as inputs to the business case and in collaboration with Operations.
  • Develop preliminary conceptual capital estimates and provide performance estimates for option screening.
  • Provide and/or direct simulation work as appropriate that allow for PFD and equipment definition and optimization and comparative gas costs assessment. Interface with vendors to ensure validity of technical solution as well as to determine optimal pricing and performance.
  • Guide Jr Process and Conceptual Engineers including Technical and other Training.
  • Provide support at customer presentations and participate in client knowledge acquisition sessions. Provide techno-commercial proposal support as may be required.
  • Ensure correct incorporation of project capital and operating cost parameters into the Financial Model. Support and ensure validity of all process/technical inputs into supply contracts.
  • Provide inputs related to process performance in conjunction with equipment suppliers for business case and contracts. Work with Proposal/Engineering/Execution to ensure seamless transition into detailed proposal and project phases. Provide PE with required process inputs for contracts with equipment suppliers. Provide insights to ensure robust plant operability to Project Execution and Operation. Ensure good linkages and correct inputs from, both Messer Germany and other suppliers.
  • Serve as point of functional expertise for discipline (ASU/HyCO) for the Company. Manage/lead simulation development and simulation systems. Provide basic design information for unit operations. Lead development of P&IDs. Guide testing of plants once on stream. Participate in P&ID reviews and Hazops and other risk reviews as necessary. Ensure optimal design of equipment taking into account performance and reliability.
  • Develop, maintain, and train on roles required for the discipline including cost estimate, performance estimation, and simulation.
  • Key outputs include simulations, BFDs, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment sizing and specification.
  • Key interfaces include Business Development, Operations Support, Product Management, Messer SE, Proposals, and Execution.

Qualifications:

  • Masters (required) or PHD (preferred) in Chemical Engineering or similar degree/experience.
  • 15 years in Process and/or Conceptual Engineering. 5 in Senior role.
