JOB TITLE: Program Chaplain – Christ Recovery Center Phase 3&4
FLSA STATUS Exempt
JOB STATUS: Part-Time Temporary (2 months)
REPORTS TO: Program Director – Chaplains
LOCATION: On-site in Saint Paul, MN 55130; Must be able to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting employment.
PHYSICAL SETTING: Emergency shelter/transitional housing environment
SCHEDULE: Day shift, Monday to Friday, Holidays, and occasional weekends.
Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities (UGMTC) serves those experiencing hunger, homelessness and addiction in our community. We provide Christ-centered, discipleship-oriented pathways and programs that restore dignity and wholeness to our guests and residents.
The Chaplain program is dedicated to providing exceptional spiritual care, non-therapeutic counseling, case management support, and general services to our residents. UGMTC Chaplains invite people to the love of Jesus by being conduits of hope through humility.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Leads and provides direct pastoral care and support care for men in the Christ Recovery Center (CRC) Phase 3 and 4 components of the program with limited supervision and in alignment with UGMTC’s mission, values, and goals. Guides groups of residents through programming with one-on-one pastoral care and case management. This includes facilitating groups, designing a spiritual development curriculum to meet UGMTC and program objectives, documenting resident progress, and providing program recommendations to the Program Director.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Exercise independent judgment in pastoral care, non-therapeutic counseling, and planning spiritual curriculum to support the CRC recovery program and align with UGMTC’s mission, values, and policies.
  • Assist the program director-CRC and the Program Director of Chaplains in developing, integrating, and implementing program policy, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Confer with the Program Director of Chaplains and other leaders to review and evaluate the departmental goals and priorities; assist in evaluating program effectiveness and achieving program objectives.
  • Make independent administrative and procedural decisions and judgments within the scope of the role.
  • Advise program staff and provide theological guidance; monitor doctrinal integrity within the CRC program.
  • Provide pastoral care to individuals and groups in accordance with ministerial ethics and standards, including visitation, prayer, non-therapeutic counsel, and spiritual direction. Design individual spiritual goals for each resident as a part of broad program expectations.
  • Teaches classes to groups of residents on general study of the Bible.
  • Use established case management methodology and practices to evaluate group member progress and provide case management through regular one-on-one meetings; ensure resident confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA Privacy Regulations.
  • Update resident progress in Case Worthy software by recording accurate and timely case notes. Follows all policies and procedures; maintains other program records and reports.
  • Establishes a welcoming and safe environment for men in recovery. De-escalates and resolves issues and conflicts that occur with staff and/or residents, ranging from the expression of verbal anger to violence.
  • Work with program directors to coordinate care for residents; act as a liaison connecting assigned residents to other UGMTC services, programs, and resources to support partnerships and achieve program objectives.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with other departments within UGMTC and surrounding community organizations such as churches, hospitals, police departments, and jails to ensure access and positive experiences for UGMTC residents.
  • Lead prayer and devotions with staff, attend and may lead UGMTC-sponsored spiritual enrichment activities.
  • Plan and lead retreats in coordination with Program Directors.
  • Plan, prepare, and teach weekly CRC and Bible classes for residents and UGMTC program staff; design curriculum as needed.
  • May perform pastoral services for weddings, funerals, hospital, and jail visitations.
  • Maintain ongoing learning by attending professional development seminars and training, including counseling and therapeutic techniques.
  • Represents the Christian values and ethics of UGMTC with residents, staff, and the community.
  • At any time, with or without notice, perform other duties and activities as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in theology, counseling, psychology, social work or related field
  • 2 years of experience as a Pastor, Chaplain, or spiritual Leader in an established ministry or a congregation
  • Case management and pastoral counseling experience
  • Working knowledge of the 12-step program preferred
  • Experience working with people experiencing mental health issues, homelessness, poverty or addiction.
  • Licensed/Ordained minister, including ecclesiastical endorsement where required.
  • Valid driver’s license and be insurable by UGMTC’s insurance carrier.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Support UGMTC’s statement of Christian faith and desire to share that faith, prayer, and knowledge with staff, volunteers, and residents. Ability to demonstrate this word and deed by supporting the ministry of UGMTC, attending a local church, and being committed to personal prayer and study of the Bible.
  • Understands biblical concepts and principles; able to transfer these concepts and principles through teaching, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals and theological books.
  • Ability to perform sacerdotal functions, baptisms, and conduct worship services.
  • Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with all policies and state and federal laws.

  • Leadership and management skills, able to identify and use best practices.
  • Decision-making on administrative procedural matters.
  • Analyze information to define and solve problems.

  • Proficient in operating Microsoft Office software, Case Worthy, and other business-related software applications.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow safety and other specific instructions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of issues impacting people experiencing homelessness and underserved or at-risk communities.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with various constituencies in a culturally diverse community.
  • Implement program guidelines and offer suggestions for improvement.
  • Apply knowledge of other UGMTC departments and services to explain them to residents and staff.
  • Self-motivated and strives for the continuous improvement of program outcomes.
  • Cultivate a supportive, collaborative work environment within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to create and sustain an environment of humility and teachability.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Work is performed in an emergency shelter / transitional housing environment with no unusual physical demands.
  • Must be able to lift over 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Work hours will be variable based on the needs of Christ Recovery Center and ministerial needs.
  • Work involves physical effort encountered in normal, everyday office activities.
  • Work requires pushing, pulling, reaching, crouching, stooping, walking, twisting, carrying, and other physical activities.
