Summary:

The Clinical Director for Outpatient Services is a critical role responsible for overall leadership and operations for three (3) key Outpatient areas at UNC Medical Center, including hospital-based and faculty practice clinics and procedure areas.

The Outpatient Compliance program evaluates current clinic policies, practices, and programs to ensure compliance with hospital and external standards, including scope of practice, developing reports and action plans, policies and tools to address gaps, and participates in the development of new outpatient programs and services.

The Clinical Education and Training program oversees the development of competencies and training for new and experienced clinical staff, including nursing and technical roles and promotes the development of new educational/training initiatives for outpatient areas based upon a regulatory need or needs assessment. The program supports efforts to develop standard work, and to promote staff working at the top of their licensure, oversees outpatient specific training programs, and collaborates with other departments, including the Center for Nursing Excellence.

The Outpatient Float Pool manages the use of per diem and full-time float pool staff to supplement clinic staffing needs, ensuring these staff are compliant with human resources, nursing, occupational health and other policies, as required by UNCMC. Using metrics, the Float Pool provides reports to Outpatient leadership regarding utilization and staffing gaps, and develops policies, tools and algorithms to support Float Pool staff in clinics. The Clinical Director has multiple fiscal responsibilities, such as the preparation of budgets, monitoring budgetary trends, developing strategies to manage variances, and recognizing opportunities to improve productivity and/or realize cost savings.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field; Nursing degree needed for this role, with Master's degree strongly preferred
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • If a Registered Nurse: Requires licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina required for this role
  • Professional nursing certification in area of specialty preferred.
Professional Experience Requirements:
  • If Bachelor’s degree, Five (5) years of operations experience in a tertiary care setting, including three (3) years of experience in a supervisory position in a related field.
  • If Master’s degree: Three (3) years of professional operations experience in a tertiary care setting with two (2) years in supervisory position in a related field. Master's degree with direct management experience strongly preferred for this role.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
  • Understands and applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.
