UNC Health Appalachian is Hiring a X-Ray Technologist - Work on Weekend (WOW) Near Boone, NC

Position Summary
As a Weekend X-Ray Technologist (WOW) at Watauga Medical Center, you will be responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services to patients during weekend shifts. Operating with state-of-the-art mobile X-ray equipment, you will travel throughout the hospital to perform X-ray examinations at the bedside of patients who are unable to be transported to the radiology department. Your expertise and dedication to patient care will ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, contributing to positive patient outcomes even during weekend shifts. Key Responsibilities include:
  1. Perform mobile X-ray examinations using WOW equipment at the bedside of patients in various hospital units, including the emergency department, intensive care unit, medical-surgical units, and operating rooms.
  2. Review patient medical records and imaging orders to confirm the appropriateness of requested examinations and ensure accurate documentation of exam details.
  3. Prepare and position patients for X-ray procedures, explaining the process and providing necessary instructions to ensure patient comfort and cooperation.
  4. Operate X-ray equipment to produce high-quality diagnostic images, adjusting exposure parameters and positioning techniques as needed to obtain optimal results.
  5. Evaluate images for quality and completeness, ensuring proper identification and labeling of images and patient data.
  6. Collaborate with radiologists and other healthcare providers to review imaging findings and assist with interpretation as needed, providing additional images or views as requested.
  7. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all X-ray examinations, including patient demographics, exam details, and imaging findings, in the electronic medical records system.
  8. Adhere to all radiation safety protocols and guidelines, including the use of lead aprons, shields, and other protective measures to minimize radiation exposure for patients, staff, and self.
  9. Ensure proper care and maintenance of mobile X-ray equipment, performing routine quality assurance checks and reporting any equipment malfunctions or deficiencies to the appropriate personnel.
  10. Provide excellent customer service to patients, families, and healthcare team members, responding promptly to requests for imaging services and addressing any concerns or questions they may have.
Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. Compensation ranges from $23.00-$33.35 per hour. This position is eligible for Work on Weekend (WOW) and shift differential on top of base rate of pay. Benefits eligible after a 60-day waiting period.
Minimum Education
  • Completion of Medical X-ray Operator-limited Certification from a State Division of Health-Related Boards
Experience
  • Clinical radiographic and imaging experience from an AMA accredited radiologic facility
Required Registration/License/Certification
  • Commensurate with Medical X-ray Operator-limited State Certification
  • Ability to complete Radiologic Technologist (limited to diagnostic x-ray) orientation program
  • Able to perform diagnostic X-ray’s referenced on the state certification performance card
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physician and acts within the chain of command, utilizing positive verbal and non-verbal skills
  • Competent in delivering safe and effective patient care within legal limits of license and certifications and hospital policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of the continuum of care provided in the patient care department
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, family, staff, and physicians
Physical Demands
  • Continuous standing and walking long periods = to or greater than > 8 hours per shift
  • Speaking, reading, and writing, expanded > 8 hours per day
  • Exposed to vibration and cramped spaces > 1-hour day
  • Frequently mobilizes patients > 4 hours per day
  • Frequently per shift: lifts, carries, pushes, and/or pulls > 50 lbs.
  • Frequently per hour: bends, squats, kneels, twists, turns, and reaches
  • Frequently per minute: hand, finger, and wrist repetition and moderate dexterity
  • Frequently per hour: exposed to soft voices > 3 feet away
  • Frequently per hour: exposed to close eye work
  • Frequently per shift: may be exposed to Ionizing/nonionizing radiation exposure, including x-ray and microwave
Working Conditions
  • Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases
  • Exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment
  • Exposed to hazards consistent with xray machine
  • Exposed to unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces), etc.
  • Handles emergency or crisis situations
  • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays)
  • On-call may be required
