Umass Memorial Health is Hiring a RN New Grad Residency Program, UMass Memorial HAH-Clinton (Leominster or Clinton Campuses) - April 2024 Cohort Near Leominster, MA

Hours: Minimum of 24, typically 32 hours on a unit with 4 additional hours weekly in the classroom. Some weeks may flex down to 28 hours (Position includes eligibility for full-time benefits). Shift: Flexibility for day, evening, and night shifts during the 13-week nursing orientation. Minimum 8-hour shifts, with flexibility up to 12-hour shift Union: MNA Status: Non-exempt/Hourly Location: UMass Memorial Health - HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital (Leominster or Clinton Campuses). Weekly and monthly classes will be held at the Leominster campus.

Required Application Materials to be submitted within ONE document:

  • Cover Letter: Please include a brief description of your background, career goals, and your top two clinical areas of interest, as well as anything else you would like to mention.
  • Resume: Please include clinical rotations, previous work experience and certifications.
  • Narrative: Choose 1 of the following narrative questions to answer. Please answer in no more than 250 words:
  1. Provide an example of a time during nursing school or in your work experience that solidified your decision to pursue nursing
  2. As we encounter challenges one typically develops strategies to manage these. Describe some of the ways that you deal with challenges and provide an example of when your approach has been successful.

Program Requirements:

  • The new graduate nurse may apply for this position prior to completing license requirements but must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing within the state of Massachusetts
  • NCLEX date must be scheduled no later than 90 days from graduation.
  • RN license must be verified by the Mass.gov website before start date.
  • Candidates must have graduated from an accredited BSN or ADN program within the last 12 months or have worked as an RN in any capacity no more than within the last 12 months of beginning of program start.
  • Only those qualified will be considered for specialty areas.

Program Summary:

  • This position is a 1-year New Graduate Nurse Residency Program to introduce the new graduate nurse to nursing practice from multiple perspectives through didactic, clinical and experiential opportunities.
  • The new graduate nurse will participate in all didactic sessions as part of the role, as well as learning to participate in the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice.
  • Orientation will consist of a minimum of 13 weeks 1:1 with a preceptor.
  • During the 13-week orientation, the new graduate nurse is expected to apply for a budgeted position on a unit, preferably the unit currently orienting to.
  • After the 13-week orientation, new graduate nurses accepted into this program are expected to attend didactic education classes once a month during this 1-year nurse residency. 

Program Description:

  • The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is designed for the newly graduated nurse or the registered nurse who has successfully passed the NCLEX exam and who has less than 12 months of work experience as an RN.
  • Over the course of the program, the new graduate nurse will participate in educational sessions designed to support the development of critical thinking, professional practice behaviors, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, clinical judgment, and knowledge assimilation to a high-tech, acute care environment.
  • New RN graduates will orient preferably on one unit with their preceptors and will be expected to work up to 40 hours per week with a consistent schedule of day, evening or night shift including every other weekend based on primary preceptor’s scheduled hours. The additional 4-hour classroom time will be on the day or evening shift (0730-1130 or 1200-1600). 
  • During the 13-weeks of orientation, the expectation is candidates will formally apply for an open RN position within HealthAlliance-Clinton.
  • Following successful completion of unit orientation, new graduate nurses will integrate into a unit as independent RNs in a position they have applied for and accepted an offer into.
  • If a position is not available at the end of the 13-week orientation, your position will be converted into a regular float pool RN position and additional training will be provided.
  • You may continue to apply for available regular RN positions on your orientation unit while in the float pool position.

  • Enhanced ability to provide quality, evidence-based care, advanced critical thinking ability and improved skill in clinical decision making.
