Qualifications:
- HS diploma or equivalent, minimum of one year working with young children, preferably in a pre-school setting.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Willingness to obtain CDA credentials, CPR and first aid certification within the time frame established by the program.
- Reliable means of personal transportation and valid NYS drivers license.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and agility required to move at children's level including bending, squatting, and kneeling.
- Assist the teacher in providing a safe and healthy learning environment that is welcoming to parents and supports and respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity and family composition.
- Assist in providing and environment and implementing a curriculum that encourages the development of self awareness, autonomy and self expression and supports the emerging skills of children.
- Assist in planning for routines and transitions so that they occur in a timely, predictable and unrushed manner according to each child's needs.
- With the parent/guardian and center team, identify strengths, needs and interest of the child and develop individual plans.
- Participate in classroom planning sessions to develop both individual and weekly lesson plans and be able to work with the teacher to provide a balanced daily program of child-initiated and adult-directed activities.
- Ensure all procedures of the component plan are followed including participation in home visits, assessments, student records, COR child assessments, case conferences and individual plans.
- Assist teacher to integrate the educational aspects of the program into other Head Start service areas.
- Manage assigned classroom in the absence of the teacher including supervision of volunteers.
- Attend all staff meetings, in-services and training. Attendance at parent meetings is required only if parents request teachers presence
- Assist to ensure that all classroom materials and supplies are kept clean and in good repair; submit yearly inventory as requested
