SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Superintendent or designee, the Custodian performs routine cleaning tasks in an assigned area, such as sweeping, polishing, vacuuming, waxing, moving and rearranging furniture and equipment. Custodian employees may work alone or with other custodians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Cleans, disinfects, and sanitizes assigned school facilities daily.
• Performs periodic deep cleaning.
• Assists other personnel in lifting and storing of supplies.
• Makes minor site repairs and adjustments to equipment such as desktops, cafeteria tables, classroom furniture, tightening doors, hinges and knobs, replacing light bulbs, fluorescent lamps, as well as spot painting.
• Maintains custodial equipment.
• Performs special custodial work upon request of faculty members and supervisory personnel.
• Operates cleaning equipment such as floor cleaning machines, carpet shampooers, vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, leaf blowers, power washers, sweepers, etc.
• Unplugs stopped toilets, sinks or fountains.
• Learn procedures for use of, and accounting for, fire extinguishers.
• Prepares site for activities and events as directed.
• Performs daily security inspections; secures facility; sets alarms.
• Performs assigned duties in a safe manner.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS /REQUIREMENTS: (At time of application)

KNOWLEDGE OF/ABILITY TO:

• Methods and equipment used in the cleaning of floors, walls, and fixtures.
• Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodian work.
• Safe work practices.
• Read, write and speak English sufficiently to successfully perform required duties.
• Hear, speak and write to receive and exchange information.
• Read and follow label directions when using any materials and/or equipment.
• Exercise extreme caution when using hazardous materials and/or equipment, including the possibility of blood-borne pathogens, by adhering to the specified warnings and required safety standards and protocols.

• Use small power hand tools such as screwdrivers, drills, etc.
• Learn to operate motorized sweepers.
• Perform manual labor, including stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, walking and standing for long periods of time.
• Work alone productively for long periods of time.
• Complete repetitive tasks.
• Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, students and the public.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Additional related experience and/or training that would indicate possession of the above skills and abilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
(Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.)

• Physical strength/agility sufficient to perform a wide variety of frequent physical tasks including moving equipment/furniture and operating equipment.
• Lift 50 pounds, carry, climb, stoop, bend, reach and perform demanding physical tasks.
• Stand and/or walk for a majority of time during the work shift.
• Indoors and outdoors work environment; subject to noise from equipment operation; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors, blood borne pathogens, which may require use of protective equipment while working; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment, hand and power tools; seeing to observe needed and completed repairs; climbing ladders and working from heights; reaching overhead and horizontally to shelve and retrieve items in high places; bending at the waist.
• Successful passage of post offer/pre-employment physical required.

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
• Monday to Friday
• Night shift
