UIC is Hiring an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor – Civil, Materials and Environmental Engineering Near Chicago, IL

The Department of Civil, Materials, andEnvironmental Engineering (CME) at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC)invites applications for a full-time tenure-track/tenured faculty position atthe Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level focused on EnvironmentalEngineering starting August 16, 2024. Candidates who work at the intersectionof Environmental Engineering and other Civil Engineering related fields areparticularly encouraged to apply.
Specific areas of interest include, but arenot limited to, cross disciplinary research in AI/ML approaches forenvironmental informatics/dynamics; indoor air quality/smart buildingtechnology for one health; earth systems; environmental biotechnology; wasteprevention and valorization; surface and groundwater management andremediation; resource recovery; environmental forensics; climate change riskand resiliency; and environmental sustainability.
The ideal candidate will complement the existingstrengths of the CME department by bridging between the EnvironmentalEngineering and one or more of the Civil Engineering research groups(Structural, Construction, Transportation, Materials, Geotechnical, etc.). Thesuccessful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate incross-disciplinary teams across the University and will complement thedepartment’s core environmental engineering and science research group withinterests in eco-restoration, contaminant fate and transport, appliedenvironmental biotechnology, water treatment, water supply, stormwatermanagement, infrastructure system management, and smart, sustainable, and resilientinfrastructure systems. Excellent laboratory facilities exist in the CME Department.
The successful candidates will possess a PhD(or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closelyrelated field, and will be expected to establish a strong sponsored researchprogram, teach, and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, and advisestudents. The successful candidate will be expected to performinterdisciplinary research, interface with industry, federal, state, local,national labs (e.g., Argonne), and other governmental agencies to attractexternal funds for support of research, provide service to the university andthe profession, and publish in technical journals.
The CME Department has a vibrant civil,materials, and environmental engineering program. Faculty members in theDepartment are highly active in conducting cutting-edge and interdisciplinaryresearch. Opportunities are available to collaborate with faculty from the departmentsof Earth and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Urban Planning andPolicy, the School of Public Health, the largest College of Medicine in the US,and the Institute for Environmental Science and Policy with a special researchfocus on urban environmental issues and the Great Lakes. The Departmentoffers a BS degree in Environmental Engineering, BS, MS, and PhD degrees inCivil Engineering, and MS and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering, andcurrently has an undergraduate enrollment of about 400 and a graduateenrollment of about 200. The UIC College ofEngineering has undergone tremendous growth in recent years; both COE facultysize and annualresearch expenditures have doubled to >200 faculty and $50 million,respectfully. Campus-wide research activity has also grown rapidly, reaching $500M.
