Job Summary

The Port Mechanic will oversee the maintenance and repair operations of Bowhead Transport vessels and equipment. The duties include coordinating maintenance and the repairs of vessels and equipment in alignment with Bowhead Transport’s management strategy, budget, & direction. This role will oversee and participate in major shipyard projects, repairs and maintenance in conjunction with 3rd party contractors, vendors, shipyards, engineering teams and a variety of other service providers. Port Mechanic will provide assistance to the Port Captain, Port Engineer and the Director of Operations in maintaining compliance with

all regulatory agencies and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties & Responsibilities (and other duties as assigned)

  • Collaborate with technicians across various trades to design, build, diagnose, repair, or perform maintenance on all mechanical assets, including vessels, forklifts, vehicles, loaders,
  • Oversee, manage, and personally execute shipyard projects, maintenance and repairs ensuring efficiency, quality, budget, and schedules are met and reporting progress to Bowhead Transport management
  • Maintain records of all maintenance and repair activities. Coordinate a reporting process with the Bowhead Director of
  • Coordinate with Bowhead management / vessel and land-based crews to facilitate

timely maintenance and repairs on vessels and equipment as needed / directed.

  • Communicate upcoming plans, travel schedules, reports, and other pertinent information to the Bowhead Transport Director of
  • Ensure that all engineering, materials and associated work meet safety and legal standards prescribed by USCG, ABS, or other regulatory
  • Identify opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs related to vessel and equipment operations, maintenance, and
  • Under the direction of the Director of Operations, collaborate with the Port Captain to select shipyards, docks, and ports for vessel and equipment repairs, clarify responsibilities for reserving space, and schedule
  • Coordinate repairs and maintenance activities with shipyard management, dock agents, port authorities and any other applicable stakeholders
  • Source all parts, materials, equipment, and supplies required to adequately design, build, maintain, repair, or improve Bowhead Transport's fleet of assets or equipment, liaising with the Port Captain, Director of Operations, and Administrative Assistant to procure and ship in accordance with Bowhead Transport’s Purchase Order
  • Attend vessel or equipment surveys and advise Bowhead Transport Management on their condition and evaluation to determine seaworthiness and fair market value estimates.
  • Coordinate with the Bowhead Port Captain to furnish insurance companies or regulatory authorities with required documentation, photos, and videos related to incidents or reports.
  • Travel as required to facilitate emergency repairs or salvage operations for vessels or equipment, as directed by Bowhead

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Proven experience in marine engineering and heavy equipment repair & maintenance
  • Proficiency in general PC operations, including spreadsheet software and word processing software, and familiarity with MS Office
  • At least two (2) years of hands-on experience operating vessels measuring 50 feet or longer.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the marine cargo
  • Effective communication and leadership
  • Familiar with remote locations across Alaska.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and
  • Problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to addressing technical
  • Possess a valid Driver’s
  • Resident of Anchorage, Alaska, Seward or the surrounding area is

Physical & Environmental Demands

The work environment varies and includes, but is not limited to, shipyards, docks, ports, bays, beaches, waterways, office space, equipment rooms, warehouse space, construction zones, and outdoor environments. Work hours may fluctuate outside of regular duty hours. While performing the duties of this job.

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may extend beyond standard office hours (8-5), particularly during the primary operating season (April – October), with many weeks exceeding 50
  • Willingness to travel to remote locations across Alaska as
  • Regularly required to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or workspace utilizing computer phones and office
  • Required to sit for prolonged periods during travel by plane or
  • Frequently required to stand and walk and routinely required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Routinely required to stand, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and
  • Frequently lifts and moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and moves up to 75 pounds.
  • Occasionally lifts and moves 75-100 pounds with the assistance of deckhands and heavy lifting equipment.
  • Ability to remain composed under pressure and handle the mental and physical demands, working in potentially hazardous situations and unpredictable weather conditions.
