Valle Vista Health System features individual units for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors, and offers inpatient acute care, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs. On average, over 10,000 patients receive care from our compassionate health care team each year at Valle Vista Health System. We are very proud to offer a Psychiatric Nurse Residency Program for our newly licensed nurses. This program reviews and discusses important concepts integral to patient safety in the behavioral health setting and helps the new nurse understand how to apply nursing knowledge, learn new skills, and think critically. More specifically, this program will assist the newly licensed nurse to transition to a confident professional with knowledge, skills, and competence in the psychiatric behavioral health nursing arena. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s (NCSBN) has provided evidence that demonstrates this transition program increases new nurse competence, satisfaction and retention and decrease stress and self-reported errors. The course content is evidence-based and aimed at strengthening core competencies considered foundational to Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.

Qualifications

Registered Nurse (RN) Job Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Indiana/Valle Vista Health System (or eligible to receive or renew).
  • Requires an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN); Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Must have a license to practice professional nursing in the state of Indiana
  • Current CPR or BCLS Certification
  • Interpersonal skills to successfully interact with patient, guest, physicians, and other employees
  • NEW GRADS encouraged to apply-excellent mentorship program and orientation available!

Responsibilities:

  • You will serve as the primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care
  • You will assess, monitor, record and communicate patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems, paper charting and other forms of communication.
  • You will perform various patient tests and administer medications within the scope of practice of the Registered Nurse (RN)
  • You will assess and coordinate patient's discharge planning needs with members of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • You will teach patients and families to understand conditions, medications and self-care skills
  • You will act as a patient advocate, assuring that all patient rights are being upheld
  • You will preserve patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Apply professional nursing care principles and procedures in the evaluation and treatment of psychiatric patients.
  • Develop interpersonal therapeutic relationships with psychiatric patients.
  • Keep accurate written charts and records of patient activities interventions techniques with patients in crisis.
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and function calmly in situations, which require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Provide prompt, efficient and responsive service.
  • Exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information analyze and project consequences of decisions and/or recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
