Provides financial counseling to inpatients and their guarantors as well as selected outpatient groups. Secures appropriate socioeconomic data relative to each account. This process includes establishing and/or confirming a medical record identification number, patient registration, detailed financial screening and analysis, verifying insurance or other third-party coverage, obtaining pre-certification on behalf of multiple billing entities, collecting deposits and co-pays, securing revolving credit applications and sponsorship referrals, obtaining necessary signatures and support documentation from patients and guarantors, coordinating financial issues with internal and external departments and resolving or referring non-financial concerns of the patients to the appropriate department or agency.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• High school graduate or equivalent is required.
• College degree or related coursework desired.
• Minimum of three years of experience in a business office. Experience with a health care provider, health care-related business or in a related industry (e.g., insurance) with emphasis on third-party payor requirements is required.
  • Combinations of Shands-specific work experience related to patient demographics, Admissions Financial Arrangements, billing and collections, patient records processing or the like and with direct public contact, may be substituted for experience.
• A working knowledge of medical and insurance industry terminology is required.
• Must have experience that demonstrates ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, recognize and react to changing priorities, make timely and accurate judgment decisions, effectively communicate with other health care professionals and work independent of direct supervision.
• Proficiency in applications, as well as demonstrated ability to work with multiple computer systems, is required.
• Must demonstrate exceptional verbal, analytical and written communication skills.
• Must be adaptable, tactful and able to work well under pressure.
• Must demonstrate and understanding of "first impression" position and the need for appropriate dress, attitude and concern associated with the position.
• A working knowledge of medical and insurance industry terminology is required.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

• CPAT preferred.
