This is a full-time onsite position with a remote option for up to 2 days per week. Subject to change due to business needs.

DESCRIPTION

Under limited supervision and using scientific knowledge, executes responsibilities related to the Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine (CMBB) and the Scripps Center for Oceans and Human Health (SCOHH) aligned offices, which encompasses faculty, researchers, graduate students and technical staff from SIO and other scientific institutions. The Center Operations Coordinator helps manage this consortium of scientists and other participants, and administers operational activities. Provides scientific management and project support to the lead Principal Investigator who directs both Centers. Actively assists with preparation, writing, and assemblage of annual reports, grant proposals, and budget sheets. Effectively communicates the scientific activities of CMBB and SCOHH to others within and outside of the SIO UCSD community, both verbally and in writing. Responsible for event planning and implementation (developing and organizing trainings, workshops, and events that advance biotechnology/biomedicine science). Manages web pages and social media platforms. Performs community engagement at multiple levels and regularly facilitates and engages stakeholders and scientists in planning and implementation meetings and sessions. Builds and maintains inter-organizational relationships and synergies among all project partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree (MS) in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Master's degree level of understanding of complex, interdisciplinary research topics in the ocean sciences, including concepts, methods, and scientific terminology.

  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research preferred. Strong knowledge of and scientific training in biotechnology, multi-omics science, and marine sciences.

  • Extensive experience with the most appropriate software programs necessary for efficient job performance (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, scientific graphics packages, etc.).

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. Excellent planning and organizational skills to effectively work within a complex administrative structure while providing support at alllevels in managing day-to-day operations of a research program.

  • Knowledge of grant proposal preparation and grant award administration. Knowledge of federal and non-federal agency requirements and regulations for sponsored research.

  • Skill and experience assessing the most efficient means of retrieving information and the skill to develop innovative approaches, techniques, and procedures to provide more efficient and responsible services. Demonstrated ability to keep accurate, orderly files and records.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate goals of a research program to various audiences and interact with diverse people and personalities. Demonstrated experience and skill in writing and editing materials for agency reports, grants, and publications. Demonstrated ability to synthesize non-scientific and scientific text, and knowledge of scientific content so that text is not edited in such a way to jeopardize the integrity of the science written.

  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Ability to analyze, evaluate, and implement actions to develop and enhance administrative polices, procedures and methods according to program's needs and anticipate needs for program growth. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, conflicts or impacts to others, research options, present alternatives, implement solutions and follow-through to assure goals are met. Demonstrated ability to analyze, formulate solutions, and resolve problems in the absence of supervisor.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Demonstrated ability to work diplomatically with diverse research scientists and associated personnel.

  • Proven ability for effective time management with competing time demands. Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and to initiate actions with little or no direction, managing workflow and priorities, following through on tasks to completion and meeting deadlines with multiple interruptions and changing priorities.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must pass a background check.

  • Must be willing and able to travel.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required, especially as it relates to travel, e.g. conferences and workshops.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $82,500 - $151,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $39.51 - $72.56

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
