At UC San Diego, we are seeking a Project Scientist to join our research team in the Department of Cognitive Science within the School of Social Sciences. These roles are crucial for individuals who wish to contribute significantly to research projects without the expectation of leading the team of conducting independent research.
Project Scientist will:
1) Make creative contributions to the research team.
2) Publish and conduct research under the supervision of Professor Douglas Nitz.
3) Potentially serve as Co-Principal Investigators, though not as Principal Investigators. It is important to note that this position does not mandate independent research or the development of an independent research reputation. Also, while university and public service are valued, they are not compulsory, and there are no formal teaching responsibilities. The duration of each appointment is subject to the research project's timeline and the availability of funds.
4) Candidates should have experience in utilizing analytical procedures to quantify spatial, in directional tuning of neural activity, in manufacture of microwire recording devices and the procedures used to steriotaxically implant them for recordings. They should also have experience in using Matlab programming and analysis platform to analyze neural data, and application of basic histological procedures applied to brain tissue. Additionally, they should have experience in design and execution of navigational tasks for rodents, in development of models for 3D printing of small parts for microdrive manufacture and in handling tracking data to continuously map locations and directions and actions.

The project scientist will primarily work in the area of systems neuroscience to develop and execute neurophysiology recording experiments in behaving animals (rats) and to analyze and publish the results of such experiments.
