DIRECTOR OF CAMPUS HOUSING

Auxiliary Operations

Classification: Class Code 6111 / Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited / On-Site

Anticipated hiring rate: $115,000 - $130,000 (commensurate with experience)

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general direction of the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Campus Housing plans, directs, coordinates, and administers all aspects of the College's graduate and professional school housing services, residence life, and related facilities. The incumbent develops and implements strategic plans, sets department goals, and monitors progress. They are expected to provide exceptional customer service to residents and act as a liaison between the public, internal departments, and prospective students.

The incumbent will oversee residential functions at the College’s new mixed-use residential facility at 198 McAllister, which opened to residents on August 4, 2023. This building is a campus hub for housing, academic, and community functions. The new 15-floor, 355,900 GSF building is comprised of a blend of academic and residential spaces. The 656 residential units (667-beds) will house a mix of UC Law SF and UCSF students and professionals as the first residential building of the College’s Academic Village. This residential community is also available for students and professionals from other institutions. The upper 12 floors are residential, a mix of furnished efficiency, studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.

Starting in summer 2024, a major renovation is taking place for McAllister Tower to rehabilitate the structure and add 257 units of newly renovated residential units to the College’s portfolio. The College is also exploring the potential for additional residential opportunities in future years. Both the planned and prospective additional housing projects provide additional opportunities for growth for the incumbent.

Typical duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Directs and oversees the day-to-day management, maintenance, and administrative functions of the College's graduate and professional school housing facilities including management of Housing personnel, contract personnel, and student employees.
  • Directs and oversees all fiscal, administrative, and infrastructure associated with the operation of the College's graduate housing function.
  • Drafts, implements, and maintains all housing policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Responsible for an exceptional customer service experience for all residents.
  • Ensures accurate and timely performance of all lease administration duties including verifying lease data, tenant eligibility, and assignments. Directs move-in and move-out activities, including determination of sufficient time to turn units between tenants and preparing vacant spaces to optimal condition for new tenants, in coordination with Admissions and Facilities personnel.
  • Generates housing revenue by maximizing initial occupancy of residential units and ongoing renewal rates; anticipates future capacities and adjusts strategies accordingly
  • Ensures the provision of housing facilities and amenities that are safe, accessible, and well-maintained in close coordination with Facilities personnel and the Director of Safety, including planning for renewal and maintenance.
  • Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and effects changes required for improvement.
  • Performs monthly reconciliation of rents.
  • Establishes excellent cross-departmental relationships within the College including with Admissions, Fiscal, Facilities, IT, and Safety.
  • Represents the College to partner-academic institutions, vendors, students and their parents, and the public.
  • Oversees student residence programs that maintain and enhance the quality of on-campus residence life; and develops and monitors educational, recreational, and social programs and services for student residents, which include UC Law SF and partner institution students.
  • Interacts with students as a resource and advisor including connecting students with other campus resources.
  • Develops and directs department activities in crisis management, mediation and dispute resolution, wellness/welfare, and student discipline.
  • Develops and directs emergency management planning, policies, and protocols for student housing residents, including evacuation drills, with Safety & Facilities departments.
  • Responsible for preparing annual operating budgets and plans, developing financial information, providing comprehensive analysis and reporting, and timely processing of all related invoices.
  • Manages competitive bid and procurement processes for Housing needs.
  • Maintains key metrics and statistics about student residents and presents them in reports, presentations, and other mediums to share with internal and external audiences.
  • Develops and implements marketing/communication plan for Student Housing to maximize occupancy with emphasis on expanding demographic of available residents beyond UC Law SF students and existing partnerships (e.g., UCSF occupancy agreement).
  • Fosters relationship with partner institutions and ensures alliance between policies between institutions (e.g., conduct and Title IX referral processes).
  • Evaluate, assess, and enhance StarRez housing software for student end-user, Housing, and partner institution needs in concert with IT and Fiscal.
  • Coordinates with Special Events & Guest Services to identify opportunities for summer housing and conferences; and oversees all housing facility aspects for the same.
  • Oversees and manages vendor relationships for all amenities within campus housing facilities including fitness center, laundry room, and vending machines.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three or more years’ experience in property management/real estate or five years in related business management, marketing, or engineering.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES.

  • Proficiency with StarRez lease management, or comparable, software is preferred.
  • Must have excellent Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Outlook proficiencies.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial reports, property leases, and contracts.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Possess strong customer service orientation.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Organization, leadership qualities, and strong people skills are essential.\
