Position Summary:
The UCI School of Physical Sciences Facilities unit delivers services and supports an environment where the faculty, staff, researchers, and students can accomplish their goals (and the missions of the University and the School) in the areas of research, instruction, and administration. The School of Physical Sciences at the University of California, Irvine is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Facilities. Under minimal direction from the Assistant Dean of Physical Sciences, the Director of Facilities is responsible for all aspects of building and space management for approximately 1,017,860 GSF and roughly 415,537 ASF of allocated space including laboratory (wet and dry), research facilities, nuclear reactor, office, and common areas in 9 buildings. The Director of Facilities is responsible for the oversight of planning, construction, maintenance and renovation phases of development and construction; provides information and direction during the design, construction, and occupancy of new buildings containing physical sciences related spaces. Working with the Assistant Dean and Dean, the Director provides strategic leadership around space planning for the School. The Director of Facilities maintains an up to date space and equipment inventory and coordinates security control and evacuation for all Physical Sciences facilities. Direct supervision of two full time employees in support of daily school facilities operations. Oversees school managed user facilities such as PS stores, machine shop and copy center. Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Formulates, implements, and monitors facilities management policies and programs. Develops plans to meet objectives and deliver results. Manages fiscal, physical and personnel resources and may manage multiple facilities and personnel.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $100,600.00 - $145,700.00 (Annual Salary). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $100,600.00 - $190,800.00 (Annual Salary).
Required:
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in planning, development, and construction project management in a higher education and research setting.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate and collaborate with various internal and external constituencies on short- and long -term facilities planning and management.
  • Strong analytical, research and report preparation skills to meet regulatory and budgetary reporting requirements. Ability to identify patterns and tendencies to formulate logical and objective conclusions and to recognize alternatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in management, regulatory compliance and operations planning.
  • Broad knowledge in the areas of facilities management, space planning and allocation, security, fire and safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience and knowledge to inspect construction in progress (general and specialty structures)and read, sketch and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Service-oriented mindset
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in identifying and effectively coordinating resources to meet program needs.
  • Experience in higher education laboratory sciences units; demonstrated specific knowledge and ability to communicate regarding laboratory space and equipment (ie. fume hoods, chemical storage, security access, laser equipment)
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Preferred:
  • Strong skills in leadership, motivation of staff and team-building.
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of administrative operational activities such as risk management planning, accounting and payroll, recharge principles and event and space scheduling.
  • Knowledge of UC rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management and personnel management.

Special Conditions Required:
  • May be required to be on-site nights/weekends in an emergency.
