Department's Website:Summary of Job Duties:Histotechnicians execute histologic techniques to patient specimens in order to facilitate pathological diagnoses. Activities related to this position are heavily rooted in processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, cover-slipping, and troubleshooting issues within the lab. Full dedication to patient care, fellow coworkers, other professionals, a safe work environment and this position are also key.
Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED.
• HT (ASCP) eligible.
• 60 semester hours with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology AND chemistry, OR an associate degree with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry within or in addition to associate degree. Ability to work on occasional weekends and on-call duties;
• ASCP HT certification must be obtained within one year after completion of eligibility. Eligibility criteria is as follows: Route 1- successful completion of NACCL accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program within the last five years. Certification must be obtained within one (1) year of employment. Route 2- completion of 12 consecutive months of full time on the job training in a histopathology laboratory within the last five years. Certification must be obtained within two (2) years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• An associate degree with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry within or in addition to associate degree.
• 1 year (12 consecutive months) of full-time clinical experience in histopathology laboratory within the last five years OR 1 year (12 consecutive months) of full time veterinary, industry or research experience in histopathology laboratory.
• Certified as HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP).

• Completes order requests and restocks supplies.
• Coverslips sides; runs special stains manually or on automated stainers.
• Enters computer data and orders, retrieves, modifies and prints patient labels.
• Reviews and documents specimen procedures for Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA).
• Sorts, logs, and prepares tissue samples from surgical, diagnostic, or autopsy cases.
• Coordinates workflow in surgical pathology area in coordination with surgery schedule.
