U.M. FDSP Associates is a non-profit affiliate of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. U.M. FDSP Associates is the organization that provides patient care focused staffing for the clinic operations so that faculty and students may provide patient care to the general public.
We offer paid vacation, sick leave, personal days, and 12 Federal paid holidays. Hours of operation are Monday thru Friday with no weekends.
Provides and coordinates patient care. Promotes and restores patients' health by collaborating with dentists anesthetists and multidisciplinary team members; provides physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families; supervises assigned team members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the sedation/anesthesia process for dental procedures. Assists dentists anesthetists and other health care providers with tasks such as patient transport, recovery following minor surgery, and diagnostics procedures (manual BP, blood glucose measurement, etc.).
Setting up the Anesthesia station. Pre-testing and calibration of anesthesia delivery system and monitors.
Administering necessary diagnostics and laboratory tests, such as manual blood pressures, glucose finger sticks and HIV testing in circumstances that warrant it.
Patient monitoring of vital signs and record keeping.
Administering sedation medication to patients ONLY UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION ON THE DENTIST ANESTHETIST.
Ensuring continuity of care through the pre and post-operative recovery periods. Assisting with life support where required, including airway management.
Performing pre-op and post-op telephone calls to patients for education, information collection and confirmation of appointments.
Ordering and stocking of supplies. Maintaining a working inventory for the anesthesia carts
Transporting the patient in the peri-operative period.
Monitoring patients during peri-operative recovery.
Performing administrative duties and maintaining documentation for all cases (pre-op anesthesia eval form, sedation record, pertinent medical consults, incident reports, etc.). Documentation should be computer logged within 24 hrs. of completion of the case.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN), an associate degree in nursing (ADN), or a diploma from an approved nursing program and must have successfully completed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and have 2 years related experience. Experience as an advanced life support provider, and/or experience with pediatrics and patients with disabilities is preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
General knowledge of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act for Registered Nurses.
General Knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique and information control including blood and body fluid precautions.
Ability to perform extensive standing and walking.
Knowledge, skill and ability to perform various medical and nursing procedures and to operate medical equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Skill and ability to interact with the public, health care providers, agencies and facilities.
General knowledge of and compliance with confidentiality of records and communications regarding clients.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Working hours are generally 8-5. Hours can be flexible. We do not see patients on most federal holidays.
