Duties
If selected for this position as a Public Affairs Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing public information support.Typical work assignments will include:
Participating in developing news releases, briefs news media representatives, and prepares written material for dissemination and publication.
Planning. initiating, and implementing comprehensive public affairs campaigns to enhance the understanding of USAO initiatives among the general public and specialized groups and organizations.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with members of the local and national news media, and specialized groups interested in the USAO programs.
Evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of the national information program, media relations, and community relations programs in achieving greater understanding of the USAO's mission, goals and objectives.
Furnishing policy guidance, developing directives for policy procedures, and evaluating program effectiveness.
Advising the USAO of the viewpoints of various special interest groups and law enforcement agencies of the program's effectiveness.
Planning. initiating, and implementing comprehensive public affairs campaigns to enhance the understanding of USAO initiatives among the general public and specialized groups and organizations.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications
Qualifications for GS-09:
To be qualified at the GS-09 level, you must meet one of the following conditions as defined below:
Specialized Experience: One full year of full time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties: gathering facts and drafting press releases or news stories for publication; planning, writing and editing press releases; and conveying complex information concerning an organization's initiatives, programs, and operations. OR
Education: Possess one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Communications, Public Affairs): Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B.); OR two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of one (1) full year.
Qualification for GS-11:
Specialized Experience: One full year of full time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties: gathering facts, planning and writing material for dissemination and publication; communicating complex information concerning an organization's initiatives, programs, and operations to various audiences; and evaluating media programs, developing ways to enhance the mission and programs of an organization; and preparing magazine and newspaper articles for publication in national publications. OR
Education: Possess one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Communications, Public Affairs): Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of two (2) full years.
Education
All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet this criteria, see http://www.ed.gov

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above education requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
