U.S. Coast Guard is Hiring an Information specialist Near Portsmouth, VA

Summary This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, LANTAREA, Fifth District, Prevention, Waterways Management Branch in Portsmouth, VA.

Responsibilities The incumbent serves as a project officer for Federal AtoN projects and as a member of the Fifth District Geodetic Survey Team.

The incumbent assists with the administration of the District's Private AtoN Program, and prepares official reports, correspondence and message traffic relating to the Branch's functions.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include : Providing district policy and guidance for the administration of Short-Range Aids to Navigation missions;

and initiates and drafts waterways projects to include collection, evaluation and organizing data from field units & customers / users of AtoN systems, Completing solar calculation, range design calculations, Allard's Law calculations, hardware determination, cost estimates, Form CG 3213 / 3213A's, and requests AtoN Operation Orders.

Receiving and / or coordinating the review of USACE Federal Navigation Project hydrographic surveys, and analyzes and verifies Coast Guard AtoN are properly marking Federal Navigation Projects.

Providing technical support and subject matter expertise to the Waterways Management Branch in marine planning efforts policies and programs.

Preparing routine and policy correspondence dealing with waterways safety issues. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.

S. Citizenship is required. The position requires a valid state driver's license. The applicant is subject to pre-appointment and random drug testing.

Males born after 12 / 31 / 1959 must be registered for Selective Service. This position may require a one year probationary period.

This position requires a Secret clearance. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

This includes Time-In-Grade requirements for current status employees applying through merit promotion procedures. Status applicants applying for a promotion must have 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade.

Qualifications Education / Training Undergraduate and Graduate Education : Major study navigation, mathematics, physics, astronomy, geography, meteorology, engineering, cartography, or other subjects related to aeronautical or marine navigation and operations.

Graduation from the United States Naval, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine academies, or from one of the State maritime academies meets the undergraduate education requirements.

Successful completion of a course of flying or air navigation at one of the U.S. Government (Air Force, Navy, etc.) aeronautical or aviation training schools may be credited at the rate of 1 year of full-time training for 9 months of general experience.

Any time-equivalent combination of the above. GS-12 : Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal sector.

  • Examples of specialized experience include : involving the acquisition, collection, selection, analysis, evaluation, and preparation of reliable marine or aeronautical on navigation and related operations, including publications related to navigation;
  • a full range of complex technical marine and navigation information; serving as an editor; providing quality control regarding the timeliness and accuracy;

providing technical support and subject matter expertise to the organization; and overseeing database administration by ensuring daily updates, revisions, corrections, imports and exports to the central data base are accomplished.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have a positive education requirement.
