U.S. Army War College is Hiring a Deserio Chair of Theater and Strategic Intelligence Near Carlisle, PA

Duties

  • The duties of this position generally involve ~30% teaching, 40% scholarship, and the 30% service. Exact ratios will be determined annually by the Dean.
  • Serve as the primary instructor for at least one core course per year within a senior service college program and teach at least one elective focusing on theater and/or strategic intelligence.
  • Participate in curriculum development for resident and non-resident senior service college programs as well as the Basic Strategic Arts Program. Develop innovative methods to address strategic and theater intelligence.
  • Present intelligence related papers and serve on panels while representing the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) at national and international forums, conferences, and symposia.
  • Serve as advisor for student research projects within the resident, non-resident, and Fellows programs.
  • Serve as the College’s subject matter expert on theater and strategic intelligence. Provide leadership within the USAWC intelligence community and synchronize intelligence related efforts.
  • Collaborate with other USAWC elements to support research, educational, and wargaming efforts.
  • Regularly produce impactful scholarship related to theater and/or strategic intelligence.
  • Lecture to academic and policy-relevant audiences across civilian academe, government, and business.
  • Organize and participate in scholarly conferences, lead collaborative research projects, and mentor faculty and students on intelligence related topics.
  • Demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit in forging professional ties among the USAWC, the wider Army, the Joint Force, and the Intelligence Community.
  • Provide internal and external service, such as serving on committees, advising governmental organizations, and strengthening the intelligence capacities of international partners and allies.
  • Periodically provide updates to the Dean on all Chair activities.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Must comply with the Drug Testing Program requirements (pre-employment testing and random testing after being appointed).
  • This position has a travel requirement up to 30% of the time.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens
This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 2 years starting on or about summer 2024, but no later than 1 August 2024. Appointment may be extended in one-year increments thereafter. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement, dental and vision. Qualification Requirements:

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position such as political science, international relations, history, war studies, intelligence, homeland security studies, etc; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following:
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be rated on the criteria listed below:

1. Demonstrated Excellence as a teacher, particularly at the graduate level and for adult learners;
2. Record of scholarship commensurate with the rank of assistant or associate professor and applicable to theater or strategic intelligence (or demonstrated potential for such scholarship), or equivalent distinguished practical and/or theoretical experience in the field;
3. Graduate degree in a discipline related to the study of strategic intelligence - such as political science, international relations, history, war studies, intelligence, homeland security studies, etc preferred. Terminal degrees are preferred. Distinguished practitioners without a terminal degree, but with experience commensurate with that of a master within the intelligence field, are encouraged to apply;
4.Demonstrated record of working collegially with diverse (military, civilian, foreign) groups of graduate students, faculty, staff, and administrators;
5.Experience designing curricula and developing courses relevant to strategic intelligence. Strong candidates will have experience with designing free-standing courses, integrating intelligence into existing courses, and will readily use practical exercises and case studies;
6. Experience serving on or advising high-level government councils or at the strategic level in military or civilian organizations; and
7. Extensive professional network enabling access to academic institutions, think tanks, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, etc.
