U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is Hiring a MASTER DERRICK BOAT Near Norfolk, VA

Duties

  • Operates Derrickboat and Push Boat to position floating boom cranes at various outdoor locations with limited maneuverability and where accuracy is critical.
  • Instructs, and directs deckhands and other boat crew in their operations, safety and activities.
  • Trains subordinates both in safety requirements and operations of the vessel.
  • Directs the maintenance of all lifesaving and firefighting equipment, lights, instruments, lines and signaling devices including the upkeep and cleanliness of boat. Directs Drift-Collection Operations.
  • Serves as a Mate and relieves the helm from the vessel operator of the HUME, HARRELL, ADAMS II, EWELL and crane barge ND-7.
  • Serves as deck hand aboard any Navigation Support Unit vessel and/or aboard any Floating Plant vessel if directed by the Chief of the Navigation Support Unit or Port Captain.
  • Performs vessel administration to include preparing daily and monthly reports of operations, purchases required supplies and materials, and recommends maintenance and repairs to vessel and equipment.
  • Performs the more difficult ship rigging, including installation and repair.
  • Operates outboard motor-powered skiff while investigating surface or underwater objects away from vessel

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must have a USCG 200T Near Coastal License with radar endorsement.
  • Incumbent must obtain a USCG 500T Near Coastal License with radar endorsement within two years of hire.
  • Incumbent must obtain a near coastal towing endorsement on their USCG license within two years of hire.
  • Incumbent must obtain a Certificate of Completion from the North American Crane Bureau, Inc. showing that the applicant has successfully completed the technical workshop for Mobile Crane Operators Training within one year of hire.
  • Incumbent will comply with safety regulations, occupational safety and health standards, and other safety directives and orders.
  • Incumbent is enrolled in the hearing conservation program and must undergo pre-employment, annual, and pre-termination programs.
  • The incumbent will enroll in the Department of Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program to include passing a urinalysis drug testing prior to appointment and passing random urinalysis drug test thereafter.
  • This position has an on-call requirement.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Master Derrickboat without more than normal supervision. Operates Derrickboat and Push Boat to position floating boom cranes at various outdoor locations with limited maneuverability and where accuracy is critical; Skill in operating from hand signals and radio communications when loads are behind obstructions and not visible to the operator; Ability to use on-board computer, navigation equipment and software, throttle controls and helm controls. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Efforts: Work requires technical control changes to maneuver the crane and load around obstructions and to position the load at the desired location. Work requires heavy effort in pushing, pulling, and depressing various levers, clutches, and brakes. The incumbent is subject to strain caused by vibrations of the crane and from the jerking and jolting motions while lifting and moving loads. Hand and eye coordination is required when operating controls to maneuver vessel or crane in congested and confined areas. Work occasionally requires moving objects by hand (up to 50 pounds) such as lifting hooks and cables, changing rigging, etc.
Working conditions: Incumbent works outdoors in a partially enclosed cab in all types of weather. Incumbent is exposed to loud, unpleasant noise, heat, and fumes produced by the engine. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of injury caused by swinging loads or turbulent waters and weather extremes.
