TUOLUMNE TRIBAL COUNCIL is Hiring a Native American Monitor, Level 1 Near Tuolumne, CA

Position Summary (As a trainee): Under the supervision of the Director of Cultural Resources, The Level I Monitor trains under and works with the Senior Monitor assigned to the project. The Level I Monitor will be trained to act as a liaison between the Community Council, archaeologists, and project managersto help ensure that cultural resources are treated appropriately.

The Level I Monitor learns to be responsible for spotting indications that an area has been used as a traditional cultural property and estimate how extensive the site might be; and prevent damage to a site by actively communicating with the Senior Monitor on duty.

Duties and Responsibilities (As a trainee):

  • Communicate verbally and in writing with Senior Monitor on duty and Cultural

Resources Director

  • Complete necessary forms and submit them to the Cultural Resources Department
  • Prepare well-written reports on any findings at a project site (i.e. all items relevant to Me-Wuk Culture)
  • Accompany Senior Monitor in the field for site monitoring projects to survey construction and mitigate impacts to any Native American cultural resources
  • Learn to identify archaeological deposits and other cultural related resources (i.e. native plant life, geology, village sites, etc.) and potential areas of impact
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to scheduled start time if required; work cannot be delayed or rescheduled if the monitor fails to report for duty
  • Due to the cultural significance of the work involved, it is recommended that monitors abstain from alcohol consumption during the duration of the project; under no circumstances will the monitor be under the influence of alcohol during working hours
  • Adhere to all Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribal regulations and policies
  • Interest in acquiring knowledge of identification and protection of Me-Wuk sacred sites and cultural resources
  • Has, at a minimum, successfully completed 40 Hours of Cultural Resources Training sponsored by the Tribe
  • Ability to learn how to identify archaeological deposits and potential areas of impact
  • Has high school diploma or equivalent or is actively pursuing such education
  • Ability to travel to project sites within traditional tribal territory
  • Must possess a valid California drivers license and comply with the requirements of the Tribes driving policy and insurance requirements.
  • Ability to learn how to read detailed, complex documents
  • Ability to hike up steep terrain and hike long distances
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to adhere to flexible scheduling
  • Owns a sturdy pair of hiking boots, daypack, and water bottle. Tribe will provide all other required safety equipment.

Physical Requirements:

This position is deemed a level 2 and requires walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time; climbing stairs, stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching; pushing, pulling and lifting up to 30 pounds; raising objects overhead; manual dexterity for operation of computer, phones and small office machines; hearing, talking and good verbal and written communication skills; repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and fingers.

Native American Preference:

Preference in filling vacancies shall be given first to qualified Tuolumne Me-Wuk Community Council Members and then to enrolled Native Americans of any federally recognized tribe. Documentation for claiming preference must be provided with the application for consideration. Other than the above, the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribe is an equal opportunity employer.
