Tumblehome, Inc. is Hiring an Editorial Director Near Boston, MA

Are you interested in helping to inspire young people about science, mathematics and technology? Would you like to work for a small company that values creativity and partnership? Tumblehome seeks an editorial director to oversee all editorial aspects of producing a new series of short curricula for middle school afterschool programs. While other team members will supply STEM expertise and write first versions of the curricula, the editorial director will make sure that all printed and online materials are attractive, branded and consistent. Duties will include collating feedback from field trials and incorporating changes as well as coordinating timelines, services and product components created by four participating organizations.

Tumblehome is an award-winning nonprofit publisher of books and curricula featuring science for young people. Its mission is to excite young people about STEM through the power of story. Our emerging curriculum division works with three other organizations who provide assessment of student learning, research, and dissemination of new materials. These partners include Harvard affiliated research organizations and national leaders in out-of-school time STEM coordination and evaluation. One duty of the editorial director will be to oversee communication among the four organizational partners and help establish a vibrant intellectual climate of innovation in the service of young people’s learning and thriving. You will be able to help shape a new line of work that will make a difference in the lives of children and adolescents and the adults in their lives in communities across the U.S. and even internationally.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Background and skills in all phases of curriculum creation and/or publishing.
  • Good visual sense; experience in graphic design or work with graphic designers
  • Strong writing ability with excellent proofreading skills
  • Experience managing multiple teams and coordinating them to meet a schedule
  • Track record in producing curricula and related materials from start to finish
  • Ability to develop facilitator manuals and training materials in the education field
  • Excellent computer skills and facility using multiple programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google apps (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides), and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Excellent planning, coordinating and organizational skills a must
  • Flexibility and positive management skills essential, given involvement of four organizations
  • Ability to lead by example and with clear expectations
  • Commitment to equitable opportunities for all staff and learners and cultural sensitivity regarding the curricula and communities
  • Experience writing successful grant applications, including to federal funders, a plus
  • A background in science or engineering is a plus but not required

This position will primarily be remote, though occasional in-person meetings (Boston area) and some travel will be required. Salary is $85,000 and up based on skills and experience, with benefits including healthcare and retirement. Tumblehome has generous policies for vacations and time off.
