Veterinary Assistant Job Description
CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN—until cleanliness is quick and superb, there is no time to learn anything else
Clock in by 8:20 AM
Check on animals in back
Ask Sr. Assistant if you need to do anything special for animals in hospital, like give meds
Walk, water and feed (Walk, clean cages, feed/water). If Sr. staff is here, and lots of critters are here, see if she wants you to walk or clean/water/feed
Restock exam room and surgery, etc
Hold for Sr. Assistant as needed.
TPR anyone who just needs TPR.
Assist in surgery, as directed, when gas anesthesia is NOT IN USE
TPR recovery animals every 5 minutes until extubated, then every 5-15 minutes until able to remain in normal “down” position
Walk, water and feed animals in back for the night, or at noon on half days.
On Monday, wipe down entire MedRx cart and clean drain plug on washer, and check off list.
On Monday, clean bathroom
Clean sink in exam room every night, and morning as needed.
Clean tub as needed.
Sweep around front door as needed (daily).
Clean, sweep and mop entire hospital on an as-needed basis.
Wash mop heads with plain hot water and wring out and lay out to dry, or hang out to dry.
Shake out laundry and wash as needed.
Wash anything in lab sink as needed (daily).
Wash any fecal loops and slides in Clorox container and change the solution, once a week.
Put together syringes as needed (every other day).
Assist with running blood work as directed.
Assist in exam room (TPR, pull vax, HW Test, client education)
Prepare for surgery
Clean surgery and instruments
Re-pack surgery packs.
Autoclave
Lock up (closets, back door)
Anything else doctor needs done
