Job Profile Summary

This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Advanced Practice related duties: Under the direction of a physician, provides health care services to patients, ensuring optimal patient care. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. A specialist level role that is a recognized subject matter expert in job area typically obtained through advanced education and work experience. Typically manages large projects or processes with limited oversight from manager, coaches, reviews and delegates work to lower level professionals, resolving difficult and often complex problems.

Job Overview

Positionprovides anesthesia care, including pre-, intra-, and post-operative management, for all types of surgery across the age span, in collaboration with an Anesthesiologist. Position works collaboratively with anesthesiologists, nurses, physicians and other medical center personnel to provide clinical care.This position also participates in the clinical and didactic education of nurse anesthesia students enrolled in Nurse Anesthesia programs.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

1.Master’s degree in Nursing.

2. Graduated from an accredited nurse anesthesia program.

3.Nurse Anesthetists license.

4. American Association of Nurse Anesthetists certification.

5. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

6. One (1) year of critical care nursing.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listedbelow are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Interviews and assesses patients pre-operatively including: exam, evaluation, consultation, written note, pre-op orders (cosigned when appropriate) and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia.

2. Selects anesthetic agents and determines an anesthetic plan for adult or pediatric patients. Understands and applies the clinical implications of age and development to all patients.

3. Inserts intravenous lines and invasive monitoring lines as indicated.

4. Administers general and regional anesthetics consistent with the patient’s anesthetic plan.

5. Induces and maintainsanesthetic state, recognizes abnormal responses and undertakes corrective action for these.

6. Provides safe transfer of care of the patient to the appropriate care unit (i.e.PACU or ICU.)

7. Responds to emergency codes and provides emergency treatment (i.e., intubation, airway management) for resuscitations throughout the hospital.

8. Supervises, instructs and evaluates student nurse anesthetists in the clinical setting.

9. Prepares classes and delivers lectures to student nurse anesthetists as part of their formal classroom education.

10. Participates in the preparation and delivery of written and oral exams for the students nurse anesthetists.

11. Acts as a resource person to Operating Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing personnel regarding airway management, effects of anesthesia, etc. Manages recovery of PACU patients including discharging from the PACU in collaboration with the anesthesiologists.

12. Actively pursues continuing education in the field of nurse anesthesia as required by licensure and AANA recertification standards.

Physical Requirements

1. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking.

2. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfer patients and equipment.

3. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.

4. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise and possible exposure to radiation, lasers, electric shock, etc.

5. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases and other transmissible infections.

6. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.

7. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.

8. Handle emergency and crisis situations.

9. May have contact with hazardous materials.

Skills & Abilities:

1.Ability to demonstrate clinical competency in all anesthesia areas and for patient’s of all ages (i.e., neurological, pediatric, cardiac, invasive hemodynamic monitoring and regional anesthesia). Candidates lacking expertise in specific areas of clinical practice must be amenable to retraining in that area.

2. Ability and willingness to participate in clinical and academic training of student nurse anesthetists.

3. Has the skills and knowledge to provide care to the age groups of the population served including: Knowledge of growth and development; Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care; Provide age-appropriate communication.
