The Student Nurse - Summer Immersion Program is an opportunity for nursing students to gain hands-on patient care experience in a nursing assistant role. Opportunities are available in our inpatient care areas at Tufts Medical Center including maternal fetal medicine, labor and delivery, hematology/oncology, adult complex med/surg, ICU, emergency, and procedural areas. Placement will be determined by your experience, interests, and departmental needs.

2. Complete the first screening. This will be sent via text and email.
3. If selected, you will be invited to interview with the hiring leader by Zoom. Interviews will be held the first two weeks of April.

Job Overview
The Student Nurse/Clinical Care Technicianworks under the supervision of the professional nurse and collaborates to meet the needs of the patient within the scope of the role. This roleassists in direct patient care, provides environmental support and facilitates patient safety on designated unit and other units as needed. The clinical care technician has successfully completed and maintains competencies in role specific skills. The clinical care technician provides an environment supportive of the patient and family centered model of care.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program.
3. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
1.Completion of a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training program or equivalent.
2.Completion of one clinical rotation
3. Completion of nursing fundamentals course
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listedbelow are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
1. Assists the professional registered nurse in the functional care of patients, ensuring efficient and patient centered care appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population.
2. Performs delegated tasks and communicates all findings/concerns to the professional nurse.
3. Provides, orassists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) in a safe, efficient and respectful manner.Answers call lights and seeks appropriate personnel/action. Performs hourly rounding per established guidelines.
4. Greets patients, families, visitors and other staff utilizing the principles of hospital service standards. Introduces self to patients and family, asking patients and family how they would prefer to be addressed. Maintains patient and family confidentially at all times.Responds to patient and family requests promptly, seeking nurse's supervision as needed.
5. Collects, records, and communicates the patient's clinical data to the assigned nurse in a timely manner.
6. Prepares room for admission/transfer/discharge, assuring standardize equipment is ready for use.Cares for patient belongings. Completes belongings list
7. Transports or accompanies patients as necessary to other areas of the hospital in an efficient, safe, and respectful manner.
8. Provides comfort measures such as positioning, changing linen, back rubs, etc. to patients in an efficient, safe, and respectful manner.
9. Promotes patient activity by assisting with mobility and range of motion exercises as assigned
10. Sets up for procedures as requested by nursing/medical staff.
11. Cleans and discards used equipment and supplies following procedures.
12. Collects specimens and performs specimen testing, while maintaining Standard Precautions; prepares specimens for the lab.
13. Maintainsbiomedical equipment, checking par levels and working order for BP cuffs, EKG cables, leads, oximeter cables, etc. Sends malfunctioning equipment to Medical Engineering per established procedure.
14. Cleans wounds and applies DSD after wound is assessed by nurse
15. Performs 12 lead EKG
16. Connects monitoring equipment to patient under the direction of the nurse
17. Primes intravenous tubing with solution containing no medication
18. Acts as a sitter as requested by the nurse, adhering to the sitter guidelines, to ensure patient safety at all times.
19. Supports and promotes open communication with co-workers to ensure a positive environment.
20. Negotiates all scheduled breaks with nurse to ensure adequate coverage to meet the patient and unit needs.
21. Performs the necessary tasks to ensure a clean, clutter-free, and safe work environment for patients and staff.
22. Cleans and stocks equipment and supplies to ensure adequate par levels to meet patients' needs. Reports non-functioning equipment and other environmental problems to the appropriate individuals in a timely manner.
23. Covers for the Unit Coordinator in answering the telephone, call lights and greeting visitors to the unit.
24. Adheres to department expectations regarding attendance, notifies the nurse whenever he/she leaves unit, completes mandatory education, utilizesresources and supplies in a cost effective manner, attends educational offerings when staffing on the floor allow, attends staff meetings when appropropriate (or reads minutes after).
Physical Requirements:
1. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking.
2. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfer patients and equipment.
3. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
4. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise and possible exposure to radiation, lasers, electric shock, etc.
5. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases and other transmissible infections.
6. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.
7. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.
8. Subjected to irregular hours.
9. May have contact with hazardous materials.
Skills & Abilities:
1.Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
2. Ability to assist in providing care for a designated group of patients under the direction of a licensed nurse and according to unit guidelines hospital policies, procedures and protocols.
3. Demonstrates the skills and knowledge to provide care to the age groups of the population served including:Knowledge of growth and development and Provide age-appropriate communication.
4. Maintains positive customer relations in all interactions.
