Job Summary

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Operations, the Laboratory Operations Manager will be a collaborative team player with a friendly work style. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, with strong written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. The Laboratory Operations Manager will support the full scope of Lab and Business responsibilities including but not limited to characterizing and quoting incubation space rates, ongoing customer service to incubation clients, providing shared supplies and spaces, leading maintenance and build-out special projects, safety and EH&S compliance and Hazardous Material handling. The Laboratory Operations Manager will have the ability to work independently on projects, from conception to completion, and must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities and confidential matters with discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and optimize the lab operation processes in order to create an efficient lab space for our incubation clients
  • Oversight of equipment, safety, lab built-out and moves and all other facilities-related tasks
  • Ensure ongoing ordering of supplies (PPE, chemicals and gasses, office supplies, and shared snacks/coffee in the kitchen)
  • Interface with the building owner for facility condition issues (pipe leak, roof drip, elevator failure)
  • Administer the ongoing insurance tracking and compliance of the incubation companies
  • Arrange for PM and calibration for all laboratory equipment
  • Enforce safety rules and protocols
  • Guide the work of professional service contractors (Safety professionals, building contractors, architects)
  • Implement all EH&S laws and rules throughout the BSL2 labs, specifically including HazWaste and HazChem handling
  • Manage space planning. Meet with potential incubation clients to match offerings with needs
  • Respond to urgent and emergency situations by alerting the associated services or emergency services
  • Manage Purchase Orders and contracts for service providers
  • In charge of physical building issues and safety response, IT infrastructure, alarm (system and security response) and physical security of the space. This may require periodic off-hours response (infrequent nights, weekends, holidays)

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • BA or equivalent in Business or Science preferred
  • 6 years of Lab Management experience preferred, particularly in the Life Science and Biology industry
  • Able to structure recurring tasks into simplified processes (ordering of supplies, e.g.)
  • Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects/tasks, and also be extremely effective independently
  • Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality, discretion and professionalism
  • Ability to anticipate change and react efficiently and expeditiously; adaptable and able to meet demands of a fast-paced organization; flexibility with last minute changes
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly, with the ability to deliver results on time

The annual salary range for jobs which are performed in US, Massachusetts is $90k to $135k. Please note that the salary range is a guideline and compensation may vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, experience, competencies and work location.

This role will be eligible for our hybrid work model which allows employees to split their time between working 3-4 days on-site and off-site. In certain circumstances the hybrid work model may change to accommodate business needs.
