MSG is seeking a Junior Planner / Landscape Architect with the desire to grow personally and professionally. The prime candidate is expected to possess in-depth knowledge within one or more planning specialties such as economic development, comprehensive planning, or environmental planning. In this role, you will put your problem solving, logic, and creativity to the test with a position that will provide an opportunity to be part of a multi-discipline and highly interactive team of engineers, surveyors, landscape architects and technicians, working with planners, architects and our clients to provide dynamic design solutions on many types of projects. Each day, you will provide support for all phases of design and construction activities, all the while helping to develop efficient, timely, and cost-effective solutions for our clients.
Key Responsibilities
1. Interprets, understands and applies applicable state, county and local codes, ordinances and regulations
2. Initiates actions necessary to correct deficiencies or violations of regulations
3. Writes, or assists communities writing a variety of ordinances and regulations relating to development controls
4. Provide updates to Comprehensive Plan and land development regulations
5. Mentors and trains staff to efficiently and effectively review various types of development applications including permits, site plans, plats, variance and rezoning requests
6. Identifies community problems, issues, and opportunities in particular neighborhoods that could be mitigated through better community planning
7. Develops long range plans for communities with common developmental issues
8. Develops strategies to promote economic and community development or efficient land use consistent with community goals
9. Recommends priorities, schedules, and funding sources to implement public improvements plan
10. Attends substantial number of evening and weekend meetings
11. Experience in design and plan preparation
12. The ability to engage reviewing agencies while preparing technical designs and addressing comments is a critical part of our process. The ideal candidate will be comfortable communicating and coordinating with review agencies.
13. Projects could include site design for commercial and residential projects; parks & recreation facilities, municipal facilities such as streetscapes, parking facilities, and municipal buildings in urban, suburban, and rural environments.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
1. Licensed Landscape Architect in Michigan or ability to quickly become licensed through CLARB or similar
2. Professional Engineering License, AICP, or PL
3. 10 years of experience in capital improvements with a specialty in transportation planning design, working as a civil engineer, landscape architect or Planner
4. 2 years serving in a project and/or design management role
5. 5 years of experience with business development in Michigan and or surrounding areas
6. Proven ability to develop/maintain client relationships
7. Experience with industry design standards, guidelines and specifications (i.e., local municipal codes and state construction standards)
8. Proficient in AutoCad/Civil 3D, InDesign, Lumion, Photoshop, and SketchUp
9. Passionate about sustainability and the opportunity to work on challenging multimodal projects that make communities more livable
