JOB DESCRIPTION

Acute Care Step-down nursing is a career where trained medical professionals work with patients transitioning out of ICU but who typically require more care and attention than patients on a hospital's general floors. In other cases, ill patients on med-surg floors may need more medical attention and be transferred to step-down care. Step-down nurses treat patients experiencing many kinds of ailments, including cardio, neuro, surgical and emergency room (ER) patients, as well as those with chronic illnesses. Because of this, step-down nurses must be well-versed in medical knowledge and personable patient care.


DUTIES

  • Checking patients' health status daily and making note of any changes or concerns.
  • Caring for multiple patients throughout the same shift, often varying in age and condition.
  • Monitoring patients with life-saving medical equipment such as IVs, catheters, feeding tubes, and ventilators.
  • Responding to "code blue" alerts and other urgent situations.
  • Providing a comfortable and secure environment for the patient while acting as their advocate.
  • Manage patient pain relief and sedation by providing pharmacological and non-pharmacological intervention, monitor patient response, and record care plans accordingly.
  • Work with EKG monitor technicians to evaluate and interpret EKG strips.
  • Interpret laboratory results and cardiac tests, and proactively educate patients in health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Initiate intravenous therapy, administer medications, and provide care for post-operative open-heart patients and post-cardiac catheter patients.
  • Maintain responsibility for the clinical activities of all nurses caring for patients assigned and prepare annual evaluations on all nurses assigned.
  • And other duties as required.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) certification
  • A valid nursing certificate, BSN, or MSN degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid unencumbered RN license for the State of California.
  • The appropriate license to work in their state/county.
  • BLS certification.
  • Must have at least 12 months of relevant consecutive acute care experience in this specialty.
  • Preferred 12 months of RN-Step-Down Unit experience.
  • Current vaccinations and health clearance certification.
  • Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Must have previous experience with starting IVs.
  • High-level interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with patients during stressful experiences.
  • Strong organizational abilities and good communication skills
  • Fluent in English.

HOURS OF OPERATION

  • Full-Time: Shifts may vary*

COMPENSATION
  • $90,000-145,000 Annually
