In this opportunity you will counsel students on post-secondary planning including relevant high school course selection, career development, college options, and other post high school alternatives. Job Overview: The Post Secondary Counselor is responsible for assisting students and their families in mapping out and planning educational journeys that lead to high school graduation and successful placements and experiences after High School, and assisting students in the development of social, emotional, and educational plans that best meet individual learner needs. The Post Secondary Counselor will create and manage a process for designing and building high school and college academic planning guides and will own the systems used to produce and manage these guides. The Post Secondary Counselor will partner with the Education Department and the Education Director in researching and recommending K-12 schools as well as Universities that will best suit SMSC students. The Post Secondary Counselor represents the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and the Education Department in a positive and professional manner.

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Valid Minnesota certification in School Counseling or ability to get a provisional license preferred.
  • Three or more years of related work experience in an Education setting.
  • Experience as a Post-Secondary Counselor or Guidance Counselor desired.
  • Mandatory reporter of suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to promoting high academic success for each student.
  • Demonstrates strong planning and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates computer skills, Microsoft, Word, and Excel as well as LMS/SIS and/or Naviance or MaiaLearning.
  • Valid Class D driver’s license is required with a good driving record.
  • C.P.R. and First Aid Certifications or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
