Job Description

Title: Educational Support Personnel (ESP) Unit B

Reports To: Special Education Coordinator and Principal

Evaluated By: Special Education Coordinator and Principal

Job Purpose: To assist and work at the direction of the teacher(s) and Special Education Coordinator or Principal, with tasks related to the instructional programming, student supervision, and classroom management. To perform all tasks within the specifically designed instructional approaches and learning objectives set forth in the Individual Education Plan (IEP). This is an hourly position with the work day being that period within contracted hours.

Education and Experience:

● Minimum: High School diploma or equivalent, preferred relevant Bachelor’s Degree

● Prior experience working with children (Preferred)

● Experience and/or knowledge preferred about:

○ Childhood development

○ Various disability types

○ Behavior management/Behavior Support Plans

○ Instructional strategies

● Good communication and organizational skills

Preferred Skills and Knowledge:

● Ability to work cooperatively with school staff and parents

● Knowledge of developmentally appropriate social, physical, emotional, cognitive and communicative characteristics of children

● Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

● Willingness to learn curriculum

● Knowledge/experience working with age group

● Ability to demonstrate flexibility with students and schedules

Reports To: Special Education Coordinator and Building Principal

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

● Assist teacher(s) in the implementation of students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP).

● Assist teacher(s) in the operation of the classroom.

● Under the direction of the teachers and other licensed staff, the ESP will assist students in accessing the curriculum.

● To support student learning by providing effective strategies, accommodations, and modifications as needed to meet goals of students.

● Implements behavior, social skill plans as designed by special education team members, in designated settings; records and inputs data as directed.

● When deemed necessary by the Principal or Special Education Coordinator, the ESP will collect and record data, provide written and/or oral feedback regarding student’s performance and participate in consultation meetings with licensed staff to ensure effective strategies are being implemented and goals are being met.

● Providing continued supervision of students in a transportation setting when requested (transition time in the building).

● Maintain confidentiality, treating all information about students, families, and staff in strictest confidence.

● Supports an individual that requires significant and ongoing support (e.g. partial or full physical prompting) throughout the day around adaptive daily living skills such as toileting, hand washing, mealtime routines and/or arrival or dismissal routines.

· Supports an individual that may frequently exhibit significant behaviors that may be considered potentially harmful such as physical aggression, bolting/ eloping, and/or dysregulated behavior. This may or may not result in the ESP following a specified safety protocol for the student.

· Engages in completion of ongoing individualized data collection for student, implements an intensive individualized Behavior Support Plan (BSP), and/or contributes and distributes home log communication.

· Participates in professional development, consultation, and practice around effective behavioral/ SEL teaching, de-escalation, and overall support for student with social/emotional/ behavioral/ medical needs.

● Other duties relating directly to the needs of students may be assigned by the Principal or the Special Education Coordinator.

Work Environment:

▪ Be able to handle frequent interruptions

Physical Requirements:

▪ Ability to lift 25lbs.

▪ Be physically and emotionally capable of carrying-out responsibilities and duties in a busy, digital environment. This position requires sustained physical activity such as sitting at a desk for several hours a day, hand/wrist movement as in writing or using a computer keyboard/mouse. Other activities may include moderate to frequent exertion in body movements such as reaching, bending and twisting.
