Summary Description

Under the direction of the startup manager or project manager, performs tasks required to prepare building automation systems hardware and software for function and acceptance testing. Provides 24-hour hardware service availability for non-commissioned systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.
  • Provides 24/hours/day, 7/days/week hardware and software service availability on both commissioned and non-commissioned systems through participation in on-call rotation.
  • Tests building automation systems for proper hardware/software operation prior to customer acceptance.
  • Assists with control functions.
  • Completes all necessary paperwork including checkout sheets, job journals, material requisitions, material repair forms and timesheets.
  • Reads and interprets schematics, BAS diagrams and blueprints
  • Retro-fits existing control systems to new BAS controls with minimal assistance.
  • Assists with start-up testing of motor control systems and variable speed drives.
  • Troubleshoots new systems installation related problems.
  • Safeguards and maintains Tri-M equipment, material, tools, and vehicles.
  • Assists higher level technicians on field service calls.

Job Qualifications

Skills/Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years field experience with electrical/mechanical systems installation or 2-year electrical/mechanical degree.
  • Proficient in Startup Technician I duties and knowledge.
  • Good work ethic, self-starter with good attention to details.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Above average math/logic skills.
  • Good customer relations skills.
  • Intermediate level computer literacy including word processing, data entry, and processing emails.
  • Confident and decisive with ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete company required training.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the assigned work location/office.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Must purchase company required personal tools (see attached list) and maintain in good condition.
  • Ability and willingness to drive company vehicles as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally to jobsites as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Working 40 plus hours/week, scheduled in 8 to 10 hour shifts. Working overtime as needed.
  • Standing and climbing 4 to 6 hours/day.
  • Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending (90°) 4 to 5 hours/day.
  • Twisting (180°) and walking 2 to 3 hours/day.
  • Squatting and sitting 1 to 2 hours/day.
  • Lifting weights of 0 to 100 lbs. at the following frequencies: continuous lifting of 10 to 35 lbs.; frequent lifting of 35 to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting of 50 to 100 lbs.; sizes & shapes of objects vary from concrete blocks to cylinders to 20' lengths of conduit; average carry requirements, 60 lbs. for 40'.
  • Ability to lift from floor to above shoulder.
  • Repetitive use of hands includes: continuous grasping up to 50 lbs.; frequent pushing and pulling of 50 to 75 lbs.; and fine motor coordination for receptacle installation and wire terminations.
  • Repetitive use of feet is required for operating conduit benders and vertical climbing.
  • Vision adequate for blueprint reading and color coding for wire identification.
  • Balance adequate for continuous climbing of ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
  • Environmental factors include working in: temperature extremes of 0°F to 100°F; up to 8 hours inside or outside; atmospheric exposure to dust, gases, fumes, odors; and poor ventilation in confined spaces.
  • Special hazards include exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and explosive hazards.
  • Personal protective equipment includes use of hardhat, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, and gloves. Equipment on an "as needed" basis may include lanyards, safety harness, face mask, respirator, hearing protection and Nomex suit.
