Position Summary:

The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the clinical activities of the Outpatient Behavioral Health Services. Working collaboratively with the department leadership, this individual will manage systems to ensure the clinical practice and documentation meet or exceeds standards of practice. This individual functions as an exceptional practitioner, mentor, role model, consultant and leader for the clinical staff and other members of the Outpatient Behavioral Health Services team.

Major Position Responsibilities:

The position characteristics reflect the most important duties, responsibilities and competencies considered necessary to perform the essential functions of the job in a fully competent manner.   • Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements.
  • Functions as the clinical resource and support for Social Work and Therapy staff of Outpatient Behavioral Health Services.
  • Establishes a framework for staff to advance practice relative to clinical judgement, cognitive skills, and the resolution of ethical dilemmas.
  • Assists clinical staff in formulating required documentation in the medical record.
  • Monitors the milieu for safety, environment of care and regulatory compliance (The Joint Commission, CDPH, etc.).
  • Provides milieu management; monitors milieu for possible crisis intervention; supports staff in providing clinical interventions and de-escalation of high-risk patients.
  • Works collaboratively with the staff and department leadership to facilitate admissions to Outpatient Behavioral Health Services, assigning new clients a primary therapist and physician, if needed.
  • Works collaboratively with hospitals in transitioning patients from Outpatient Services to In-patient unit as necessary.
  • Provides clinical supervision for MSW and MFT associates, meeting the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences requirement for clinical supervision.
  • Provides feedback regarding the clinical performance of licensed staff therapists to department leadership to assist in the completion of performance evaluations.
  • Facilitates Group Individual Therapy using approved curriculum and standard group facilitation techniques as needed.
  • Documents in the medical record in a concise and timely manner.
  • Provides “back-up” for primary therapists in their absence.
  • Works collaboratively with Transportation department and office staff to ensure appropriate scheduling of client transportation.
  • Monitors very high-risk patients and assesses them for suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation and grave disability and assists therapist with hospitalizations.
  • Dialogs consistently with attending physicians regarding clinical issues and concerns.
  • Serves as a mentor for staff in application of the therapeutic process to attain desired patient outcomes.
  • Helps facilitate Treatment Team meetings; creates Treatment Team rosters and distributes to staff. Maintains Treatment Team binder and card file.
  • Provides training and orientation for new staff as requested by department leadership.
  • Reviews documentation of staff to ensure it meets standards. Provides ongoing training as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with department leadership to ensure that ongoing audits of the medical records are completed.
  • Promotes staff participation in department performance activities.
  • Assists in departmental performance improvement data analysis and performance improvement plan.
  • Follows up on client concerns and directs staff to appropriately utilize the chain of command to ensure professional outcome resolution.
  • Completes daily group therapy schedules. Coordinates use of curriculum within the scheduling of groups. Assists in tracking the number of groups per week provided by clinical staff to ensure productivity standards.
  • Creates and maintains monthly staffing calendar. Schedules per diem staff as needed.
  • Maintains tracking systems for admissions, discharges and assignment of client to primary therapist.
  • Assists department leadership in the collection of statistical departmental data for use in trend reports and departmental dashboard.
  • Provides “back-up” for department leadership in their absence. Communicates any high risk issues or program concerns to department leadership.
  • Communicates effectively with team members, ensuring consistency in communication between the manager and supervisor and lack of confusion or conflicting messages.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ related experience, required.
  • Experience with individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, preferred.
  • One (1) year supervisory or management experience, preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the DSM and behavioral health theory and practice, required.
  • Experience with group facilitation, required.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively utilizing both written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands in a calm, controlled manner.

Education:

  • Master’s degree in psychology, behavioral science, social work, counseling, or a related discipline, required.

Licenses:

  • Current California LCSW, LMFT or Psychologist, required.

Certification:

  • Current BLS certification; American Heart Association Healthcare Provider, required.
