General Summary:

The High School Teacher assists students in learning the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women. The High School Teacher reports to the building principal.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches district-approved curriculum.
  2. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  3. Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  4. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  5. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  6. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  7. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, and, in harmony with the goals, established clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
  8. Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists, as required.
  9. Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth and keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  10. Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  11. Supervises classroom, students and volunteers.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. Masters degree or higher preferred. Skills to teach technique in a program grades 6 – 12 including conducting full orchestra as well as string ensembles.

Must meet all State of Michigan Teacher Certification Requirements. 

Specific Duties 

Teaching and Performance 

  • Teach beginning 6th grade band (like-instrument classes of Tpt, Tbn, FL, CL); rehearse and conduct the middle school curricular bands: 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands plus jazz band 
  • Co-Teach at Central High School: Symphony Band and Jazz Band
  • Conduct East Middle School 6th grade Honors Band and lead on annual district tour
  • Organize, teach, and continue to foster the solo & ensemble program 
  • Organize, teach and program concerts scheduled throughout the year 
  • Participate in MSBOA Concert Festivals, MSBOA/Local Solo & Ensemble
  • Provide highly skilled instruction to beginning and intermediate band musicians
  • Able to plan and teach in a collaborative environment.
  • Assist with the Central HS Marching Band

Administrative 

  • Work collaboratively with TCAPS District Music Department staff
  • Coordination with EMS music colleagues and district wide band directors, development of schedules, curriculum, budget, handbooks, communications, programs, etc.
  • Provide supervision, record keeping, and arrange for the maintenance of an extensive inventory of band instruments. Maintain the band music library.
  • Work collaboratively with district wide music boosters organization as well as area parents with the CHS/EMS band program.
  • Demonstrate and maintain “total school and community” awareness in dealing with students, parents, administration, teaching staff, and community members.

Desired musical skills 

  • Versatile musician with varied musical interests 
  • Experienced concert conductor of middle school band literature with advanced rehearsal skills 
  • Proficient performer on their primary instrument as well as ability to demonstrate correct technique on all band instruments with exceptional tone, intonation, and artistic expression.

Supporting materials documenting application

Finalists should be prepared to include some or all of the following: 

  • Recordings of concert ensemble performances 
  • Festival adjudication sheets in concert demonstrating positive evaluations of past performances 
  • Select and teach repertoire for middle school band as part of interview process
  • Appropriate references
