Trauma Specialists of Maryland is Hiring an Internship Jan 2024 - Dec 2024 Hanover, PA Near Hanover, PA

We’re looking for Interns who are interested in learning more about treating trauma.

We believe in ongoing professional and personal development. We get excited teaching others about what we do and giving them a good foundation to be a future clinical professional. We believe in finding the right fit for our practice at every level, including our interns, because we hope to eventually hire them!

We believe in inclusivity and are on a learning journey as we build an anti-racism practice.

If you are reading this and thinking, that is me! I want to learn more about treating trauma!

Our clinical team is exceptional. Every. Single. One of them! I know because I liked them so much that I hired them. We are committed to not only excellent treatment of our clients, but our own community and our own professional development.

You’ll know this Internship is for you if:

  • There’s no greater feeling of satisfaction for you than working with clients as they experience growth and healing.
  • You value a work environment focused on anti-racism
  • You seek out continuing education for fun!
  • Interacting with other like-minded therapists floats your boat.

What we are looking for in an Excellent Intern:

This position is ideal for someone looking for a full year practicum working in a group that values flexibility and focuses on supporting you in doing the work that you love and developing into the therapist that you want to become. We have well designed offices to work in. We enjoy the application process because it helps us get to know you and to make sure that you have the best learning experience that you can while meeting all of your educational requirements.

Let’s Get the Bad Stuff Out of the Way First…

  • This is an internship. While we value flexibility, you will be working around established clinician schedules. This will include evening hours and potentially weekend hours. We will do our best to work with your coursework schedule.
  • We want you to get as many client contact hours as possible, which may include assisting with intake or other administrative tasks. It lets you know our process and helps you learn what administrative needs there are in a private therapy practice.
  • If appropriate, we will make sure that you have clients that you can see for individual sessions. These clients are all screened ahead of time to make sure they will be a good fit for a student.

Now for the Good Stuff:

  • We provide referrals: This means that we will fill up your caseload, likely as quickly as you can handle it! We will also give you some coaching on how to talk with clients and get them booked.
  • We have a practice manager: There is a lot of administrative support in our practice. Everything in the building is taken care of, all of the details of practice management are done for you so you can focus on therapy!
  • We offer free clinical consultation: We want you to talk about cases and be learning along with us. There are 4 peer consultation sessions each month and site supervisors are also available as needed to talk through cases with you in addition to your internship supervision.
  • We offer many learning opportunities: From skills coaching to Alpha Stim to running groups, there are a variety of ways to learn and grow with our practice.
  • We have fun!: Our staff meetings are full of laughter and hanging out together. We also have some staff happy hours, weekly casual staff chats, etc, all for us to get to know each other and enjoy fellow therapists.
  • We provide ongoing training

What You’ll Be Responsible For:

  • Letting us know the requirements of your internship
  • Doing notes, treatment plans, discharge summaries
  • Keeping up with client communication
  • Working with other providers as needed
  • Focusing on the self care that you need

Now, Let’s Talk about the Job Requirements:

  •  You need to be a first or second year graduate student. We have the ability to work with Social Work and Counseling Interns.
  • You love working with clients and are prepared to work with clients that have extensive trauma histories. We have lots of clients and we will teach you to provide great therapy. This often requires emotional energy, compassion, and a willingness to be flexible and try new things in new ways to find what works for each client.
  • You are comfortable with treatment planning. This starts from the first phone call, to be able to conceptualize where to start and what a client needs. Our confidence translates to their comfort and providing a plan and a way to move forward helps them to know they are working toward something. This gives hope!
  • You are open to working on yourself and your own biases. We are serious about inclusion and offering a safe therapeutic place for all races, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and abilities.
  • You can tolerate notes. So there are not many of us out there that LOVE notes, but as long as you can tolerate doing them, it is a requirement for ethical treatment and insurance reimbursement.
  • You are self-motivated. This position offers a lot of independence, so you will need to be able to motivate yourself to follow up with phone calls, schedule clients, and be present fully for sessions. We are not micro-managers, but will ensure that you are meeting our high clinical standards.
  • You are compassionate toward clients, toward other therapists, and toward yourself. Compassion is a focus for us in all of these ways. We strive to be a compassionate practice full of compassionate humans.
  • You like EMDR! You don’t have to be trained yet, but having enough interest and drive to learn about it and possibly be trained will be important. About 80% of our client referrals are people asking for EMDR specifically. Don’t worry, we like other modalities too, such as IFS, DBT, Neurofeedback, Yoga…just to name a few!
  • You are open to new ideas and opportunities. We have a lot going on as a practice. A lot. There are all kinds of opportunities to contract with community agencies, to learn something new, to offer an intensive, to learn Alpha Stim. We are connected to our community and offer new things all the time!
  • You are passionate. We are so passionate about the work that we do! We heal people from trauma. That is big. That is life changing. That is community changing. And that motivates us to do what we do. So, you will feel part of our tribe if you are also passionate about treating trauma.

You Will be a Good Fit Here If You’re a Human Who:

  • Plays well with others and enjoys team work
  • Wants to make an impact on our community
  • Enjoys having co-workers to chat with from time to time
  • Wants to pursue excellence in your work
  • Enjoys growing personally and professionally
  • Takes ownership and pride in your work
  • Has a good sense of humor
  • Has a pet or loves plants (no, seriously, it is something we all have in common!)

In short we are looking for future therapists who are already passionate about their work, enjoy community and professional development and can foster a supportive work environment. We don’t expect perfection (at all!). We are all humans here and learning as we go!
