POSITION DETAILS:

Employment Type: Substitute 

Work Hours: On Call, As Needed | Hours are not guaranteed, will vary, and are based on district needs.

Location: District-Wide

Salary: $22.00 per hour

PRIOR TO HIRE:

SUBSTITUTE VEHICLE MECHANIC

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision by the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, to perform general mechanical work in the overhaul and repair of school buses, automobiles, trucks, fork lifts, mower tractors and other vehicles; to perform preventive maintenance on school buses and other District operated vehicles; to perform emergency school bus driver service; and to do other related work as may be required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects on a variety of gasoline and diesel powered buses, trucks, automobiles, tractors and other motorized equipment;
  • Perform bus safety inspections including brakes and tires;
  • Repair or make replacements as necessary;
  • Use a variety of hand tools, diagnostic equipment welding equipment and a variety of mechanical aids in the repair, adjustment and maintenance of motorized equipment;
  • Repair broken or damaged bus windows and frames;
  • Repair seat covers and frames and secure floor mountings;
  • Inspect and replace wheel oil seals;
  • Change oil and filters and lubricate joints as necessary;
  • Service transmissions, batteries, emission systems, electrical systems, steering systems, differentials, power steering and universal joints;
  • Order parts and keep part inventory up to date;
  • Maintain a variety of files and records pertaining to motorized equipment repair, overhaul and maintenance;
  • Steam clean engines and chassis;
  • Inspect and repair wheel bearings;
  • Record and log services performed and time on jobs;
  • Repair or replace other worn or broken parts which could lend to failure or costly repair if left unattended;
  • Advise Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic III of need for any repairs or replacements.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE OF 

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered motorized vehicles and equipment;
  • Principles and theories of the internal combustion engine;
  • Operation and use of diagnostic and testing equipment;
  • Safe working methods and procedures;
  • Legal mandates, policies, regulations and guidelines pertaining to the repair, overhaul and maintenance of transportation and automotive equipment.

ABILITY TO

  • Perform needed skilled preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on all school buses and District operated vehicles;
  • Diagnose the source of mechanical and electrical malfunctions;
  • Estimate time and materials;
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, parts and supply catalogs;
  • Write routine reports and correspondence;
  • Interpret mechanical and electrical schematics and diagrams;
  • Work with minimal supervision;
  • Maintain established pace;
  • Perform repetitive tasks and complex tasks;
  • Respond appropriately to direction and changes;
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools used in the automotive trade correctly and safely;
  • Maintain simple records and prepare complete and concise reports;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EDUCATION

High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the preventive maintenance and repair of school buses and other District operated vehicles desired.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate (Class B) California Driver's License;
  • Have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must perform in carrying out the essential functions listed above.

Physical Demands: Walk, stand, stoop, squat, kneel, bend, climb, reach (continuously); push, pull and twist (occasionally); lift up to 25 pounds alone, to 100 pounds with assistance (occasionally); grasp and manipulate tools / equipment (continuously); use seeing, hearing and speaking.

Working Conditions: Most work performed indoors, some outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat (Non-weather); vibration; outdoor weather conditions; loud noise (example; bus engines) and possible exposure to dust, wind, and sun.
