Diesel Technician III
- Starting pay $27/hr
- Adjustand reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
- Alignfront ends and suspension systems.
- Attachtest instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges in order to diagnose malfunctions.
- Disassembleand overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and
- differential units.
- Examineand adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
- Inspectbrake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are
- in proper operating condition.
- Inspect,repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and
- compressors.
- Inspect,test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as
- handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
- Operatevalve-grinding machines to grind and reset valves.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and
- machinery.
- Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
- Installs or rebuilds diesel engines.
- Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
- Repair and adjust seats, doors, and windows, and install and repair accessories.
- Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
- Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
- Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
- Test drive trucks and buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
- Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as
- power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
- Other duties to ensure the safe operation and efficiency of the department.
- 5 years’ experience.Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the most difficult of all vehicle and equipment service.
- Must be able to teach Mechanic B and C as time permits, more complex repair techniques.
- Mustdemonstrate superior mechanical skills and mentoring capabilities.Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the most difficult of all vehicles and equipment in service.
- Must be able to teach Mechanic B and Cs, as time permits, more complex repair techniques.
- Must demonstrate superior customer service skills and mentoring capabilities as well as perform other duties to ensure the safe operation and efficiency of the department. The Mechanic A must possess a CDL license with air brakes and a passenger endorsement, 609 and 608 air conditioning certifications and at least four (4) H, T, or EV series ASE certifications.
- ASECertification is the preferred method of hiring and promotion.
- In lieu of ASE Certifications an A Tech must have four (4) years of full-time heavy-duty vehicle maintenance
- Experience and pass a practical test demonstrating A Tech proficiency.
- The physical demands described here are representatives of those that must be met by the employee to successful

- 10% of work is accomplished in doors and in air conditioned or well-ventilated facilities.
- 90% of work is accomplished outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions; most work
- is performed alone and in remote locations.
- Frequently stands and walks; ability to sit for up to three hours; walk for long distances and on possible sloped
- ground or slippery and uneven surfaces; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to lift or
- handle material weighing up to 50 to 75 lbs. without assistance; ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and
- crouch; and corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication.
- Exposure to heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job.
- Exposure to considerable amounts of dust, vehicle fumes and noise.
- Exposure to cleaning solutions, oils, and other liquids.
- Must be able to travel for company training, meeting or support missions.
