We’re seeking an Associate Editor to work with the experienced staff of the #1 content provider in the North American rail industry, with such leading products as Progressive Railroading, RailPrime and RailTrends®. The ideal candidate is a multifaceted communicator — a journalist who is an eager-to-learn, self-starter/team player. Interest in and/or passion for the transportation industry (freight and passenger) a plus. This position provides a unique growth opportunity to increase responsibility and role in the coming years with a cutting-edge media company.

Associate Editor’s Responsibilities:

  • Help write and edit our daily eNewsletter.
  • Report and write articles, and help develop audio and video content, for our premium digital subscription offering.
  • Contribute articles to and help proofread the print magazine.
  • Help manage and contribute content on our social media channels, and work with our E-Media team to evaluate and develop use cases for AI.
  • Assist with moderating panels and introducing speakers at virtual events, and work with our Education and Events team to develop and deliver world-class paid-attendee virtual and in-person events. Some domestic travel likely.
  • Support various special sections that appear periodically in print or digital formats, some of which have advertorial elements to them.

Necessary Skills and Experience:

  • A degree in journalism or related communications field is preferred.
  • A good reporter/writer with strong news judgment, and solid editing and proofreading skills. Attention to detail (and AP Style) is a must.
  • Ensure content is optimized with appropriate headlines, SEO, links, etc.
  • Multitasking is a must. The ability to work on (and prioritize) multiple projects with varying but constant deadlines is essential.
  • New content generation: Brainstorm ideas ranging from stories to information delivery formats to new revenue streams.
  • Team play required. The ability to work well with editorial staff as well as collaborate with other departments (marketing, design) is essential.
  • Communication, in general: It’s crucial. We’re looking for a good listener who isn’t afraid to ask questions — whether it’s during the reporting/writing process or in staff/interdepartmental meetings.
